Spoilers for Wicked: For Good, the stage musical, and Gregory Maguire’s novel. Elphaba appears to melt when Dorothy throws water on her in both the film and the musical. But the movie continues past the stage show’s ending: it reveals Elphaba survived and left Oz with Fiyero, while Glinda takes action against the Wizard and Madame Morrible. Maguire’s novel is darker still: Elphaba dies after Dorothy’s water douses her.
How the film, musical, and novel connect
Wicked: For Good is based most directly on the stage musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. The musical, in turn, is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel. The film screenplay is credited to Holzman and Dana Fox, according to Universal Pictures. That adaptation chain matters: the film’s ending is closest to the stage show, while the novel is an earlier source whose ending differs.
What happens at the end of the stage musical?
Elphaba and Glinda reconnect for “For Good.” Dorothy throws water on Elphaba, who appears to melt, and Glinda is left to face what comes next in Oz. Glinda pledges to the Ozians that she will try to be good. The stage show ends shortly after the song and apparent melting, as Vanity Fair’s comparison reports.
What the film adds after Elphaba’s apparent death
Glinda confronts the Wizard and Morrible
The movie continues beyond the stage ending. Glinda stands up to the Wizard and Madame Morrible, imprisons Morrible, and tells the Wizard that Elphaba was his daughter. These scenes give more of Glinda’s political reckoning a visible resolution.

The talking Animals return to Oz
The film also closes the talking-Animal storyline more explicitly. Glinda invites the Animals who were excluded from Oz to return, and Dr. Dillamond is shown back in his classroom.
Glinda gains a connection to the Grimmerie
In the film’s final movement, Glinda returns to the place where Elphaba defied gravity, carrying the Grimmerie. The book opens for her, making her new connection to magic tangible.

Elphaba and Fiyero leave together
Elphaba has survived. She and Fiyero, newly transformed into the Scarecrow, cross the badlands and leave for an unknown destination. The film’s closing image also recalls its visual language around Shiz University, with Elphaba, Glinda, and their friends in a tulip field. The additions make the film’s ending more hopeful and more fully resolved than the stage show’s.

In Maguire’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, water is Elphaba’s fatal weakness. After Dorothy douses her, Elphaba truly melts and dies, according to Vanity Fair’s account. Unlike the film, the novel does not reveal a concealed survival or send Elphaba away with Fiyero. The novel’s ending is not simply a longer version of the musical’s: the adaptations reshape the source story and arrive at different outcomes.

If you want to read the source rather than a movie novelization, look for Gregory Maguire’s original novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
