The Valmiki Ramayana remains a foundational source for India’s larger Ramayana tradition, but its influence today is often carried through later retellings, regional languages, performance, and local artistic practice. Ramlila makes that process visible: communities bring epic stories into public life, adapting how they are told and staged rather than simply reproducing one Sanskrit text.
Valmiki’s epic and the many ways it reaches audiences
“The Ramayana” is not a single, unchanged script used in every modern performance. Valmiki’s Sanskrit epic is foundational to a broad tradition of retellings and adaptations. One especially influential later work is Tulsidas’s sixteenth-century Ramcharitmanas, a Hindi devotional retelling. The Sangeet Natak Akademi notes that most northern Indian Ramlilas recount the Ramcharitmanas rather than staging Valmiki’s Sanskrit text directly.
That distinction matters: a performance can carry the Ramayana tradition without being a direct performance of Valmiki. Later language and literary forms have helped make the story available to different audiences, while local communities have shaped its presentation in their own settings.
Ramlila turns the story into shared public performance
Ramlila presents episodes from the epic through a sequence of scenes combining song, narration, recitation, and dialogue. The Sangeet Natak Akademi describes performances across northern India, usually during the autumn Dussehra season. Many last ten to twelve days; some, including the Ramnagar staging, may continue for a month.

The Akademi names Ayodhya, Ramnagar, Benares (Varanasi), Vrindavan, Almora, Satna, and Madhubani among representative Ramlila traditions. These examples point to a practice with regional variety, not one standard production replicated everywhere.
Ramlila can also make the audience part of the event. The Akademi describes spectators singing and joining the narration, while local residents contribute as performers and help make costumes, masks, makeup, effigies, and lights. The Press Information Bureau likewise describes communities organizing, funding, performing, and attending Ramlila, which brings together drama, music, choreography, stagecraft, dialogue, and costume. These are institutional accounts of how the tradition works; they do not establish that every community participates in the same way.

Local languages and art give the tradition regional character
Ayodhya’s district government describes Ramayana devotion as part of a wider local cultural life that includes festival singing and dance, temple performance, and Ramlila. It says the costumes and language of Ayodhya’s Ramlila reflect local folk art. Its account also places the city’s artistic life amid Vaishnava, Shaiva, Buddhist, Jain, and other religious traditions, alongside Nawabi influences. The epic’s presence in Ayodhya is therefore situated within a layered local setting, rather than standing apart from it.
In a 2019 address, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu cited Kathakali, Therukoothu, Kuchipudi Yakshaganam, Yakshagana, and Ankia Bhaona as performance traditions that enact Ramayana episodes. He also described Ramayana traditions in major Indian languages and continuing reinterpretation in modern writing. These are examples and framing from that speech, not a comprehensive inventory or a current count of traditions.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi reports that television soap operas have contributed to reduced audiences for Ramlila plays and a diminished role for the performances in bringing communities together. This is the Akademi’s observation; it does not establish a nationwide trend or show that every Ramlila is declining.
Adaptation can also be a way of keeping inherited material meaningful. At the 2019 inauguration of Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra’s dance drama SHRIRAM, Naidu said, “As we know, tradition is best preserved through constant re-creation.” He used the address to discuss contemporary writing that places Ramayana ethics in modern contexts. The point is not that every new work draws directly on Valmiki, but that reinterpretation is one route through which Ramayana traditions continue to circulate.

What heritage safeguarding can—and cannot—tell us
A Press Information Bureau overview describes safeguarding approaches including documentation, archiving, training and apprenticeships, research, publication, festivals, and support for artists. These are methods cultural institutions identify for preserving performance traditions; the overview does not quantify their effects.
The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) describes viewers moving with actors through Ramnagar during a 31-day staging and gives the figure “20,000 odd viewers.” The page does not state the year of measurement, so the number should not be read as a current attendance count. It illustrates how one account characterizes the scale and moving, place-based nature of that particular staging, rather than establishing audience levels across Ramlila or India.
