Watson begins with Sherlock Holmes believed dead, but CBS later confirms that he resurfaces. The series uses his apparent death to set up Dr. John Watson’s new life and medical cases—not to remove Holmes permanently.

How does Watson kill off Sherlock Holmes?

The CBS series opens six months after the death of Watson’s friend and investigative partner. In the official season-one premiere synopsis, Holmes is said to have died “at the hands of Moriarty.” That is the story’s starting premise: viewers are told Holmes is dead, rather than shown a definitive end to his story.

Watson, played by Morris Chestnut, returns to medicine and leads a clinic treating rare disorders. CBS describes the show as a medical drama with an investigative element: Watson’s work now centers on solving medical mysteries, while Holmes and Moriarty remain part of the larger backstory.

Does Sherlock Holmes come back in season 2?

Yes. CBS’s season-two premiere guide, dated October 13, 2025, says Holmes “resurfaces after being presumed dead.” The premiere description clarifies the distinction between the initial account of his death and his later on-screen status: Holmes was presumed dead, but the series brings him back.

Before that return was established on screen, the season-one finale left the question open in interviews. In a May 12, 2025 interview, showrunner Craig Sweeny declined to say specifically whether Holmes would appear. Chestnut said he believed Sherlock was still alive; that was the actor’s view, not confirmation of a plot point. TV Insider reported both comments.

Why center a Sherlock Holmes story on Watson’s medical cases?

The show shifts the weekly problem-solving from crime to medicine. Watson’s clinic supplies the recurring cases, while the apparent death of Holmes and Moriarty’s role give the series an ongoing Sherlockian thread. In an Associated Press interview published February 19, 2025, creator Craig Sweeny described the two elements as competing for space: “They’re sort of each their own show-worthy premise in a way. And we’re blessed to have both. So they compete for space in a really interesting way.”

How does the return compare with Arthur Conan Doyle’s story?

The presumed-death-and-return motif has a clear literary parallel in Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of the Empty House,” included in The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Watson is astonished to find Holmes alive. Holmes explains that he never fell into the chasm with Moriarty and allowed the world to believe he had died. Doyle’s text is available through Project Gutenberg.

The comparison is about the story pattern, not a confirmed adaptation: the available official descriptions do not establish that Watson directly adapts “The Adventure of the Empty House.” The emphasis also differs. Doyle’s story foregrounds Holmes’s return to detective work and Watson’s shock; Watson gives its weekly focus to Watson’s medical cases, with Holmes’s fate as part of the dramatic background.
