How The Penguin’s TV Origin Relates to His Comic-Book Past

The HBO series and Tom King’s Penguin comic tell independent stories of the character’s rise. Their connection is thematic, not a shared continuity.

The Penguin is a new interpretation of the DC character, not an adaptation of one definitive comic-book origin. In DC’s February 25, 2025 interview, writer Tom King describes the HBO series and his own Penguin comic as “two entirely independent stories” about the character’s rise as a Gotham crime boss. They share a useful thematic connection, but they are not one continuous account.

Is Oz Cobb the same character as Oswald Cobblepot?

Yes: Oz Cobb is the television version of DC’s Penguin, whose name in DC’s character biography is Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot. The altered name is a difference between versions, not evidence that the show is following a separate comic character. DC’s October 2024 history feature specifically notes the series’ change from Cobblepot to Cobb; the sources do not establish a particular symbolic reason for it.

There is also a long comic-book history behind the character. DC identifies the Penguin’s first appearance as Detective Comics #58 in 1941. That publication date establishes when the character entered comics; it does not make the issue the plot source for the television series.

What kind of origin does the series tell?

It helps to distinguish two meanings of “origin.” A character origin concerns where a character comes from and how he is defined. A crime-boss origin concerns how he gains power. DC’s comparison with King’s comic is about the latter: both works tell independent stories of the Penguin becoming a Gotham crime boss. The available sources do not map particular episodes or details of Oz’s family history to specific comic issues.

The series also belongs to the screen setting of The Batman. The official DC Studios podcast listing describes it as a bridge from that film to television and names creator and showrunner Lauren LeFranc and film writer-director Matt Reeves among the guests discussing its creation. That connection places the show in the film’s screen continuity; it does not make it an adaptation of a particular comic.

What carries over from the comics—and what changes?

Aspect Comics Television
Identity DC’s character biography gives the name Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot. The series uses Oz Cobb; DC’s October 2024 history feature notes the surname change.
Continuity A character with a publication history beginning in Detective Comics #58 (1941). A version situated in The Batman screen setting, as described by the official DC Studios podcast listing.
Crime-boss rise Tom King’s comic tells its own account of the Penguin’s rise. The HBO series tells a separate account; DC calls the two stories independent.
Character approach DC’s general profile describes a calculating Gotham criminal who uses information, intimidation, henchmen, and specialized umbrellas. King sees a related theme in the two specific stories: other characters underestimate the Penguin, and he can turn perceived weakness to his advantage.

The comic-book profile is a broad description of a recurring archetype, not a promise that every version uses the same methods or has an identical temperament. DC’s biography also cautions that its information may not be accurate, complete, or up to date.

Why do the two stories feel related?

King’s comparison offers a way to understand the connection without treating the comic as a blueprint for the show. In the DC interview, discussing both the series and his own comic, he says: “Penguin’s special power is how everyone underestimates him.” He adds: “I think it’s true both in the TV series and in the graphic novel I wrote.” King’s point is an interpretation of these two works, not a rule that defines every Penguin story.

He also describes the character’s vulnerability as something that can be calculated and used as a weapon: “How much of that is calculated. How much of that he uses as a weapon—he uses his weaknesses to overtake people.” This shared interest in underestimated power is a thematic link. It does not establish shared plot events or a common backstory.

Which Penguin comic should you read after watching?

Tom King’s twelve-issue The Penguin is a natural companion if you want another story about the character’s criminal rise. King told DC that he wrote it to offer viewers who liked the HBO series a comic with similar appeal, character, and themes. DC reported in February 2025 that the series was complete and its second graphic-novel collection was available through bookstores, comic shops, libraries, and digital retailers at that time. Treat it as a parallel story rather than a continuation or source for Oz’s television history; check current editions and availability with a retailer or library.
