Slow Joe & The Ginger Accident began with an encounter in India in 2007: French musician Cédric de la Chapelle heard singer Slow Joe and recorded his voice singing without accompaniment. De la Chapelle later specified that they met in Goa, where Joe informally guided visitors. He then returned to Lyon, built music around the recordings, and formed the French quartet the Ginger Accident.
How Slow Joe met Cédric de la Chapelle
Radio France dates the meeting to summer 2007 in India and says de la Chapelle recorded Joe singing a cappella on a minidisc. In a later interview, de la Chapelle identifies Goa as the setting and recalls Joe as a guide there. He also makes an important distinction: Joe had worked professionally as a tourist guide in Bombay, while his guiding visitors in Goa was informal. The meeting was in Goa; the available account does not establish that Joe’s professional guiding career began there.

Radio France’s profile of the band recounts the encounter and recording, while de la Chapelle’s 2015 interview clarifies the Goa and Bombay details.
How the Ginger Accident formed
De la Chapelle took the recordings back to Lyon and composed arrangements around Joe’s unaccompanied vocals. Radio France says he formed the Ginger Accident, a French rock quartet, in September 2007. The project’s original method was therefore collaborative across distance: Joe’s voice was captured in India, and the band’s instrumental parts were developed and recorded later in a Lyon studio.

A 2017 retrospective interview also describes the group’s early practice of arranging a cappella material. That approach shaped the band’s sound: Joe’s vocal performances were the starting point, rather than a singer joining an already completed set of band arrangements. The retrospective interview offers further context on the early project.
Joe’s first performance with the band
In spring 2009, producer Caravelle arranged for Joe to travel to France, with the involvement of Jean-Louis Brossard, director of the Transmusicales festival. Joe performed with the Ginger Accident at the festival in Rennes in December 2009. Radio France describes it as Joe’s first concert, and a 2013 event profile also calls it his first time on stage. The careful distinction is that this was the band’s first live performance with Joe; the accounts do not establish that the Ginger Accident had never played in any configuration before then.

The group’s debut album, Sunny Side Up, was released on 17 October 2011. Radio France lists 14 songs and credits de la Chapelle and the French quartet with the arrangements. Its descriptions move across vintage rock, ballads and pop, as well as a Hindi standard revisited by the group. Those styles are useful listening signposts, not a strict genre classification.

The early recordings’ a cappella foundation helps explain the album’s variety: the band made arrangements around Joe’s voice, then placed that voice in settings ranging from more energetic rock to slower songs. Radio France’s album profile gives the release date, track count and musical descriptions. Its historical account lists Caravelle as producer, Believe as licensee, EMI as distributor and Sony ATV as publisher at the time; those credits describe the release’s arrangements then, not necessarily current rights or distribution.
