Dave Bautista has said he went broke after leaving WWE to pursue acting: his regular wrestling income stopped, he barely worked for about three years, his expenses and obligations continued, and IRS demands added to the pressure. In a separate account, he said an IRS lien kept him from selling his house and that he arranged a voluntary foreclosure. These are Bautista’s retrospective descriptions, not a published accounting of his finances.

How did Batista go broke after WWE?

In a 2019 interview with Michael Rosenbaum on Inside of You, Bautista said he “went broke” after leaving wrestling. He described a sudden change in income: regular weekly checks stopped, while his living expenses and the people relying on him did not. He also said he barely worked for three years and was hit by the IRS. In the interview, he summed up the gap this way: “it’s a whole different thing when you got to check coming in, you know, every week, and then all of a sudden you don’t have anything coming every week.”

His remarks at Denver Pop Culture Con, reported by Sky Sports, conveyed the severity in personal terms: “I starved for three years,” he said, adding that he “went broke,” “lost everything,” and “couldn’t get a job.” Those statements describe his recollection of the struggle; they do not establish a precise balance sheet or the amount of any debt.

Why did Batista leave WWE?

Bautista said he left WWE in 2010 to pursue acting, even though he had been earning a good living as a wrestler. He wanted to prove he could become an actor. The decision meant giving up the regular wrestling income before he had consistent acting work, according to his account.

Did Dave Bautista lose his house?

In a clip from Running Wild with Bear Grylls, reported by ComicBook.com, Bautista said he was “upside down” on his house and could not sell it because the IRS had placed a lien on it. He said he therefore arranged a voluntary foreclosure. ComicBook.com reported that the clip was provided by National Geographic. His account links the housing problem to the IRS lien, but the reporting does not supply a home value, lien amount, or independent financial records.

How did acting change the situation?

Bautista said the role of Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy came after years of difficulty. After getting the role and finishing the film, he said he called WWE chairman Vince McMahon about returning to wrestling for a time. His account places that call after the acting breakthrough; it does not suggest he had already regained financial stability by a particular date.

What does “went broke” establish—and what does it not?

  • What Bautista said: He described going broke after leaving WWE, a period of little acting work, ongoing expenses and obligations, IRS demands, and a lien-related voluntary foreclosure on his home.
  • What the available reporting does not establish: A specific dollar amount for his IRS debt, losses, earnings, assets, or net worth at the time. “Went broke” is his own retrospective description, not a published audit or quantified financial statement.
  • Why the title’s “before and after” wording needs care: The accounts here concern hardship after his wrestling career and his separate description of going broke again after earning money in WWE. They do not establish a distinct pre-wrestling financial crisis or a complete before-and-after financial history.
