Tom Cruise really performed the exterior-aircraft stunt in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation on an Airbus A400M—but he was secured by cables attached to a vest and anchored to a structure inside the aircraft. The visible handhold was a deployable baffle used in paratroop operations, not the system keeping him attached.

Was Tom Cruise really hanging off a flying plane?

Yes. The production filmed the sequence on an actual Airbus A400M military transport aircraft, rather than creating the entire scene against a green screen. But “real” does not mean Cruise was unsecured: cinematographer Robert Elswit described a vest-and-cable restraint connected to an internal truss and superstructure. The American Society of Cinematographers’ production account details the setup.

How the stunt was rigged

The restraint hidden from the camera

Cables attached to Cruise’s vest ran through an aircraft window and the powered door to the internal structure. That system—not his grip on the aircraft—was what restrained him. The ASC account quotes Elswit describing the setup as designed to prevent Cruise from falling away from the plane.

The handhold he grabbed

The exterior handhold was a deployable baffle associated with the A400M’s paratroop operations. Smithsonian Air & Space Magazine explains that the baffle helps paratroopers clear the aircraft before the jetstream catches them. It was the visible grip in the shot, not Cruise’s safety restraint.

How the sequence was filmed

Key grip Chris Centrella told the ASC that the sequence begins with Hunt sliding down the fuselage and grabbing the parachute door as the aircraft takes off. A 50-foot Technocrane was used for that exterior slide; the shot that followed began after a cut, so the scene should not be described as one uninterrupted take.

The crew also built a custom camera rig that passed through two port windows, with a stabilized gimbal camera positioned along the fuselage. Centrella said the production needed Airbus’s permission to meet its safety standards.

Where and when the stunt took place

The sequence was filmed at RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire, England, in November 2014. Smithsonian Air & Space Magazine reported that Cruise performed the stunt eight times. Its account also describes concerns about runway particles, bird strikes, cold and exhaust exposure, and says the stunt team and pilot watched for hazards. Those are reported concerns and precautions, not a complete inventory of the production’s safety procedures.
