The available accounts establish the broad sequence, but do not identify who initiated the test, the laboratory or method used, or the conversations that led to it.
Why John Astin remained Sean’s father
Biological paternity and the role of raising a child are different parts of this story. John Astin raised and adopted Sean, and Sean has continued to describe him as his father. In a statement quoted by a 2016 Yahoo-hosted entertainment story and attributed there to a 2001 interview, Sean put the distinction this way: “If you want to know who I am, John Astin is my father, Michael Tell is my biological father.”

Sean’s official biography also refers to John as his dad: Sean Astin’s official biography. The paternity result identified Tell biologically; it did not erase John’s place as the father who raised Sean.
