The Japanese games launched in February 1996; the anime followed in April 1997. That order is documented. The exact reasoning behind the anime team’s choice of Pikachu as its central companion is not fully established by the available official sources.
Pikachu came from the games, not the anime
The Pokémon Company’s official history dates the Japanese launch of Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Green Version for Game Boy to February 1996. The television series began in Japan in April 1997, a little over a year later. Pikachu therefore did not originate as a character invented for the anime.
That chronology matters because the anime gave Pikachu a recurring role and an unusually visible presence, helping turn a game character into a familiar face for viewers. It supports a straightforward explanation for Pikachu’s prominence: the character was already part of Pokémon, and the animated series repeatedly put it before audiences. The timeline alone, however, cannot tell us precisely why the production team chose Pikachu for that role.
What the creators say about Pikachu’s design
In an official creator profile, Ken Sugimori, Koji Nishino and Atsuko Nishida discuss Pikachu’s origins. The profile describes an early design process in which Sugimori was approaching the work from a male perspective and had not thought to create a cute Pokémon. It also recounts a decision by Satoshi Tajiri, GAME FREAK’s president and the writer of the setting text: “Tajiri [the president of GAME FREAK], who wrote the setting text, made that decision.”

The profile also connects the Game Boy’s dot drawings with the yellow used in Pikachu’s official artwork. These details illuminate the character’s design and game-development history; they are not a complete account of a later anime production meeting. They do not establish that Pikachu was always intended to become the franchise mascot.
How the anime turned a game character into the face of Pokémon
The Japanese anime’s launch in April 1997 made Pikachu a recurring on-screen character. The company history dates the animated series’ U.S. launch to 1998; it specifies September and also records the U.S. releases of Red and Blue that year. Those dates show how the character’s exposure expanded from Japan to a major overseas audience.

It is reasonable to infer that a continuing role in a widely distributed series helped make Pikachu recognizable beyond the games. But the official timelines establish what came when, not a specific casting rationale, audience metric, or one-time decision by a named producer. The sources available here do not confirm who proposed Pikachu as Ash’s partner or what reasons the anime team gave at the time.

The company’s history provides institutional context for Pokémon’s later growth. Pokémon Center Co., Ltd. was established in 1998 by Nintendo, Creatures, and GAME FREAK. In October 2000 it changed its name to The Pokémon Company and expanded into overall brand management. The company’s timeline documents those developments, but they should not be mistaken for evidence about the anime team’s original character selection.

Today, The Pokémon Company International’s overview describes a broad range of licensed merchandise, including plush, figures, clothing, accessories, home décor, and books. That wider brand presence helps explain how a highly recognizable character can remain visible across products and media. It is context for Pikachu’s enduring status, not proof of the original motive for putting it at the center of the anime.
