Both accounts also describe participation in the film’s earnings, but they use different terms.
What the reports say Stallone was paid
Stallone wrote and starred in the original Rocky. In a 2019 interview with Variety, he reportedly said he received $35,000 for the first film. Fox News, summarizing that interview, also reported his estimate that he made about $2.5 million in total from it. Fox News’ account
The Philadelphia Inquirer, summarizing the same Variety reporting in 2022, gives a different upfront figure: about $75,000 for the screenplay and acting work, plus 10 net points. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s account
The reports do not explain why the fixed amounts differ or whether they count the same categories of compensation. The evidence supports describing Stallone’s fixed pay as being in the tens of thousands, while noting that the published accounts disagree on the exact amount.

How his participation is described
A contemporaneous October 1976 Women’s Wear Daily report, as summarized in the AFI Catalog, said Stallone received one percent of gross for writing and two percent of gross for acting. AFI Catalog entry for Rocky
The later Variety account, as summarized by the Inquirer, describes 10 net points. Gross participation and net points are not interchangeable: gross refers to receipts before deductions defined by a contract, while net participation depends on what remains after applicable costs and accounting terms. The available accounts do not establish that both descriptions refer to the same participation provision, so they should not be combined into one definitive contract description.

Were the $275,000–$360,000 figures his pay?
No. Those larger sums refer to offers for the screenplay rights, not compensation ultimately paid to Stallone for making the film. The AFI Catalog summarizes a November 1976 Los Angeles Herald-Examiner report of offers up to $275,000 for the rights; CBS News reports bidding as high as $360,000. CBS News’ account
In a February 3, 1977 interview in International, Stallone recalled that an outside source offered “almost three hundred thousand.” That recollection concerns the rights offer, not his salary or settled production compensation. The 1977 interview

What the $2.5 million estimate means
Fox News’ summary of Stallone’s 2019 Variety interview reports that he estimated his total from the first Rocky at about $2.5 million. That is a later reported estimate of total earnings, not the fixed upfront amount. It should not be read as a precise salary figure or as proof that the conflicting accounts of his initial compensation have been reconciled.
