What the available accounts do show is a startlingly fast rise: within a few months of arriving on WWE’s ECW brand, he challenged John Cena and defeated him in a Tables Match at TLC in December 2009. Sheamus later recalled that some peers resented how quickly he received the opportunity, and that he expected some to want him to fail.
Was Sheamus almost fired before he won the WWE Championship?
The available accounts do not establish that Sheamus was close to being fired. In WWE’s 2013 retrospective interview, he described pressure around his rapid rise, not a threat to his job: he said some wrestlers who had spent five to ten years in WWE were upset that he had received a title opportunity so quickly.
“I knew a lot of people were expecting me to fall on my face, because a lot of people were upset that I had an opportunity at the WWE Championship,” he recalled in that interview, published April 19, 2013. That is Sheamus’s account of peers’ reactions; it does not show that WWE considered dismissing him.
How quickly did Sheamus reach a WWE Championship match?
Sheamus recalled moving from WWE’s ECW brand to a WWE Championship match against John Cena at a major pay-per-view in a matter of a couple of months. Before that title bout, he said, he had appeared on only one pay-per-view, Survivor Series, and had never competed in a Tables Match.

He described the pace this way: “I went from the realms of ECW to a WWE Championship Match at a major pay-per-view in a matter of a couple of months.” The retrospective captures his recollection of the timeline; it does not independently explain WWE’s booking decision.
What did Sheamus say set him apart?
In explaining how he approached the sudden opportunity, Sheamus pointed to confidence, his appearance and an aggressive style he believed was distinctive. “I knew I didn’t look like everybody else, I knew I brought a very aggressive style that nobody else had and I didn’t doubt myself in any way,” he said.

How did Sheamus beat John Cena for the title?
At TLC in December 2009, Sheamus defeated John Cena in a Tables Match to win his first WWE Championship. Speaking to IrishCentral two days after the victory, he reflected on its significance: “The fact that I’m the first Irish WWE champion – that overwhelms everything.” He also said he had come to WWE to become a top wrestler.
