Sadie Sink has said she was surprised Taylor Swift chose her for All Too Well: The Short Film. Of her work with Dylan O’Brien, her clearest account is about the kitchen argument: Sink said the dialogue was improvised, filmed in one take and allowed to feel like an actual couple’s fight. She praised that freedom for making the scene—and the story—feel natural. Her comments describe a specific creative experience, not a broader account of their off-camera relationship.

What Sadie Sink said about working with Dylan O’Brien

In a July 2024 interview with Bustle, as reported by Elite Daily, Sink recalled that being selected for the film felt “wildly confusing at first.” She said she had not imagined that she would reach Swift’s attention. Sink was already a fan of Swift’s music and knew the song and its history; she took Swift’s casting choice as a sign that the director believed she understood the material.

Sink’s most specific recollection of working with O’Brien concerns their characters’ kitchen argument. She said the scene was improvised and filmed once. She did not remember exactly what she said, and she was surprised when Swift told her that the scene had made the final cut. Sink had thought the microphones were there to capture the actors moving their mouths while the song played over the scene, not to record dialogue for the film.

Why the improvised kitchen argument mattered

Sink said the scene’s repeated phrases and unscripted exchanges felt true to the way people argue. “You may say the same thing over and over, but that’s real, and that’s natural. You don’t see a lot of natural dialogue in films,” she said. She added that Swift’s willingness to let the actors improvise and interact as they might during a real fight “just really served the song and the story well.”

That response is less a claim about personal chemistry than an explanation of how the scene was made to work. Sink valued the space to react naturally rather than deliver polished, scripted lines. The result supports the film’s portrayal of a relationship coming apart without turning the fictional argument into evidence about the actors’ real lives.

How the film’s crew described the scene

Cinematographer Rina Yang also described the kitchen sequence as mostly improvised. In an interview with British Cinematographer, Yang recalled operating a handheld camera while responding to Sink and O’Brien’s interaction. The one-shot approach, she explained, was not planned as a long take in advance; the handheld style felt right for the scene.

Yang’s account corroborates the spontaneous production approach Sink described, while adding the camera operator’s perspective. It does not change the distinction between the actors’ work in character and their off-camera relationship.

What All Too Well: The Short Film is

Written and directed by Taylor Swift, the narrative short stars Sink as “Her” and O’Brien as “Him.” It follows a young woman and an older boyfriend as their relationship breaks down, accompanying the 10-minute version of “All Too Well” associated with Red (Taylor’s Version). At a Tribeca Film Festival Q&A in June 2022, Swift emphasized that she was making a narrative short rather than a music video. GMA News Online covered the film’s context, and Rolling Stone UK reported on Swift’s Tribeca Q&A and the film’s production on 35mm.

Sink’s remarks answer the question most directly at the level of the work: she was surprised Swift cast her, and she appreciated the freedom to improvise with O’Brien in a key scene. They do not establish that the two actors were close friends or offer an extended account of their personal relationship.
