The card at the center of the record-setting purchase was Pikachu Illustrator. The “Charizard” in the question is a mistaken identification: the $5.275 million figure does not refer to a Charizard card. Guinness World Records identifies the card and records the transaction details on its private-sale record page. The Associated Press also identifies it as Pikachu Illustrator.
How was the $5.275 million purchase made?
Guinness says Paul bought the card in Dubai on 22 July 2021. The reported total combined cash with another collectible rather than being an all-cash payment:
- $4 million in cash
- A PSA Grade 9 Pikachu Illustrator valued at $1.275 million
- Total reported transaction value: $5.275 million
The traded card’s stated value is part of the total, so the headline amount describes the cash-and-card transaction together.

What happened when Logan Paul sold it?
Paul later sold the Pikachu Illustrator through Goldin Auctions. Guinness World Records records the auction result as $16.492 million on 16 February 2026, including the buyer’s premium, on its auction record page. The Associated Press reported the result as $16.5 million, a rounded figure, and described the auction as lasting 41 days. It also reported that the card was designed by Atsuko Nishida for a 1998 contest.
The auction figure is the later sale price, not what Paul paid in 2021. The two totals also describe different transaction terms: the original purchase included cash and a traded card, while Guinness says the 2026 auction total includes buyer’s premium. Those headline figures alone do not establish Paul’s profit after fees and other costs.
