There is no single annual salary for a royal family member. In the United Kingdom, the Sovereign Grant funds the Royal Household’s official work and occupied palaces; it is not divided among royals as personal pay. The King and Prince of Wales have separate income arrangements, while the income of other family members is not published as one universal salary schedule.

What does the Sovereign Grant pay for?

The Sovereign Grant is public funding for the Royal Household’s official duties and the maintenance of occupied royal palaces. HM Treasury’s Sovereign Grant Act 2011: guidance, last updated 5 August 2025, states: “The Sovereign Grant does not provide any member of the Royal Family with an allowance or personal income from the government.” The grant is an institutional budget, not a salary pool to divide by the number of royals.

The Royal Household’s 2025-26 financial report, published 25 June 2026, records a total grant of £132.1 million for that financial year. Of it, £67.5 million was allocated to preserving and protecting occupied royal palaces. The Royal Trustees confirmed a grant of £137.9 million for 2026-27; after palace reservicing is complete, the announced grant level is £99.9 million a year for 2027-28 through 2031-32.

These figures describe funding for the institution and its work in the stated periods. They do not tell you how much an individual royal earns.

How does the King receive income?

The King’s finances involve distinct sources and purposes. According to the Royal Household’s Royal Finances explainer, the Privy Purse is income from the Duchy of Lancaster. It is used for both official and private expenditure by the King. Separately, the King has personal income from a personal investment portfolio and private estates, which is used for private expenses.

The Royal Household does not present the Sovereign Grant as the King’s salary, and the Duchy of Lancaster’s income should not be conflated with the King’s personal income. A figure for one category cannot stand in for the other.

How is the Prince of Wales funded?

The Prince of Wales is funded predominantly by the Duchy of Cornwall. The Royal Household says he receives the Duchy’s annual net surplus, a large proportion of which is used for public and charitable work. This is estate-derived income, not a conventional salary. He does not receive money from the Sovereign Grant, although the grant supports some of his official activities through the Royal Household.

The available official explanation describes the funding mechanism but does not establish a current net-surplus figure here. It would be misleading to supply an unverified annual amount or call the surplus a salary.

Do other members of the Royal Family get a salary?

The grant can support official expenses incurred by working members through the Royal Household. That does not mean each working royal receives a disclosed personal salary, nor does it establish that all family members are paid alike. The official figures cited here do not provide a complete annual income schedule for every royal.

Which royal finance figures are easy to misread?

  • Grant versus personal income: the grant pays for institutional duties and palaces; it is not an individual’s pay.
  • Income versus net surplus: the Prince of Wales receives the Duchy of Cornwall’s annual net surplus, a figure with a specific estate and accounting basis.
  • Tax versus earnings: the Royal Household reported the King’s personal tax bills as £11.7 million for tax year 2023-24 and £12.9 million for tax year 2024-25. These are tax figures, not income or salary.
  • Current versus historical grant: the Royal Household’s 2024-25 financial report recorded a grant of £86.3 million for that financial year, comprising £51.8 million in core funding and £34.5 million for Buckingham Palace reservicing. That earlier total is not the current grant.

James Chalmers, Keeper of the Privy Purse, said in the Royal Household’s 2025-26 financial report publication on 25 June 2026: “While Royal finances can sometimes appear complex, the underlying system is clear in principle, structured in law and refined over time to ensure the Monarch can serve with independence, accountability and in the long-term interests of the nation.”

How to compare claims about royal income

Before treating a published figure as someone’s annual pay, check who receives it, which year it covers, whether it is gross income or net surplus, what it is intended to fund, and whether it is a grant, tax bill, personal income or estimate of wealth. Those categories describe different things and should not be compared as if they were equivalent.
