A commonly cited weight for Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, is 42.3 pounds. That number is reported from a 1991 Marvel Universe trading card, not established as a universal official specification for every version of the hammer. And there is no canonical real-world answer for what would happen if someone dropped it: the result depends on fictional rules and on physical assumptions the stories do not settle.
How much does Mjolnir weigh?
The often-quoted figure is 42.3 pounds (about 19.2 kilograms). Marvel Database, a fan-maintained reference, reports that this weight appeared on a 1991 Marvel Universe trading card; the card itself was not directly verified here, so the figure is best understood as a reported comics-reference detail rather than a confirmed Marvel specification. Marvel’s official pages describe Mjolnir through its stories and wielders, but do not give a universal technical weight. Marvel’s Thor: The Worthy collection and Marvel’s Thor character page are about comics material; they do not establish one figure for every continuity.
Why can’t everyone lift it?
Mjolnir’s worthiness enchantment is a fictional rule governing who can wield the hammer, not simply a statement that it has an unusually large fixed weight. “Only Thor can lift it” is not a universal rule in Marvel comics. Marvel’s official reading list describes other characters, including Eric and Beta Ray Bill, wielding Mjolnir in particular story circumstances. Marvel’s Thor: The Worthy collection The details vary by story and continuity, so a comics explanation should not automatically be treated as a complete account of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Does science explain Mjolnir’s weight?
Some explanations try to reconcile the hammer’s changing wieldability with science-fiction ideas. ComicBook.com describes an “identity recognition enchantment” that stops graviton emission when Thor grips Mjolnir, returning it to its normal weight. These are explanations or hypotheses associated with the fiction, not experimental findings about real gravitons. They do not turn the reported 42.3-pound card figure into a universal physical measurement.

The available sources do not establish a canonical real-world consequence. Saying that a dropped Mjolnir would destroy Earth—or naming a precise crater, blast, or impact force—requires assumptions the stories and the reported weight figure do not provide.

A physics estimate would need to specify at least the hammer’s actual mass in the scenario, how far and how fast it falls, what it hits, and whether fictional properties such as the enchantment affect the impact. So the defensible answer is narrower than the dramatic versions: a trading card is reported to give Mjolnir a weight of 42.3 pounds, while no universal weight or settled dropped-hammer outcome is established across Marvel stories.
