In March 1803, John Talbot Shakespear married Emily Amelia Thackeray at St John’s Church in Calcutta, bringing the two families together. Emily was the aunt of the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. John’s family was traditionally linked to a collateral branch of William Shakespeare’s family, but that genealogy is disputed: this was not a proven line descending from the playwright’s children, and it is not known whether the Thackerays knew of the claimed connection.
The 1803 marriage in Calcutta
John Talbot Shakespear, born in England in 1783, came to Calcutta as an East India Company official. In March 1803, he married Emily Amelia Thackeray at St John’s Church. A secondary historical account identifies him at the time as assistant to the Collector of Birbhum.
Emily was the eldest daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray senior. Her brother Richmond Thackeray later married Anne Becher; their son, the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray, was born in Alipore in 1811. That makes Emily the novelist’s aunt. It was Emily—not the novelist—who married into the Shakespear family.
How the family branches connected
The marriage joined the households, and another marriage strengthened the connection: Emily’s brother Francis Thackeray married John Talbot Shakespear’s sister Mary Anne. John Talbot and Emily had nine children, according to Live History India. Their children included William Makepeace Shakespear and Sir Richmond Campbell Shakespear.

The recurring names can be confusing. In particular, William Makepeace Shakespear was John and Emily’s son; William Makepeace Thackeray was Emily’s nephew and the later novelist. The shared names alone do not establish why either family chose them.
What the Shakespeare connection does—and does not—mean
The Calcutta family used the surname Shakespear, while the playwright’s name is conventionally spelled Shakespeare. The British Library’s account places the Calcutta family among the Stepney or Shadwell Shakespears and describes competing older genealogies: one proposed descent from William Shakespeare’s brother Gilbert, another from his uncle Thomas. The account discusses a family tree supplied by a nephew and a coat-of-arms drawing said to match arms granted to Shakespeare’s father, but this does not settle the ancestry conclusively.

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust notes that the playwright’s four grandchildren died without heirs, so there are no living direct descendants through his children. It separately discusses possible descent through his sister Joan. The Calcutta story, then, concerns an asserted collateral family connection, not a line descended from Shakespeare’s own children.
The British Library account is explicit about a further uncertainty: “We cannot ascertain whether the Thackerays knew about John Talbot’s illustrious relative.” The marriage brought the families together; the available account does not establish that the Shakespeare connection was known to, or mattered to, either family.

Calcutta landmarks and the family’s later story
Secondary accounts place the families’ villas near one another on Alipore Road, and identify Thackeray House in Alipore as the novelist’s birthplace. These are historical narrative details, not confirmation that the residences survive intact or are visitor sites today.
South Park Street Cemetery offers a physical memorial connection. Emily was buried there. John died at sea in 1825, after Emily’s death in Calcutta in 1824, and a memorial to him stands nearby; he is not buried in the cemetery. The British Library account reproduces cemetery inscriptions and discusses John’s will. Current cemetery access and tour availability are not established here.

A later literary connection, with a caveat
Live History India recounts a popular belief that George Trant Shakespear inspired Jos Sedley in William Makepeace Thackeray’s Vanity Fair, citing Ferdinand Mount’s 2015 book The Tears of the Rajas. This should be treated as an attributed interpretation, not a confirmed identification. Mount’s work provides broader context on British India and family connections rather than a dedicated study of the 1803 marriage.
