The founders declined Mark Cuban’s $30 million buyout question, saying they believed they could build a much bigger company. That early growth is documented; it does not prove the revenue targets they discussed on the show were reached or establish the company’s later financial performance.
What the Coffee Meets Bagel founders asked for on Shark Tank
In season six, sisters Arum, Dawoon and Soo Kang pitched Coffee Meets Bagel, seeking $500,000 for 5% equity. ABC News reported that Mark Cuban then asked whether they would sell the company for $30 million. The sisters declined. The reported exchange was a buyout question, not a formal $30 million investment offer.
The founders told ABC the company had generated $87,000 in 2013 and about $270,000 in the first five months of 2014. They forecast $1 million in revenue for 2014 and planned to reach $10 million in 2015 while spending on user acquisition and aiming to break even. Those last two figures were a forecast and a plan, not verified results. ABC also reported that the sisters gave a user range of 100,000 to 500,000, rather than one precise total, and each said she earned a $100,000 annual salary. ABC News’s January 2015 account records the pitch-era figures and the sisters’ comments.
Why the sisters turned down the $30 million buyout question
Dawoon Kang, then the company’s chief operating officer, said the founders believed they could grow Coffee Meets Bagel into a much larger business and that selling at that point would mean selling themselves short. She added that they would have welcomed Cuban as an investor. Their explanation was about retaining the chance to build the company, not a claim that the $30 million figure was a completed offer they had rejected.

Arum Kang later told ABC’s KGO-TV that the company was doing well without the Sharks, while acknowledging that their involvement might have made a difference. The decision also drew public criticism. In a July 2015 follow-up, Dawoon recalled emails calling the sisters “crazy.” Arum said she thought men might instead have been called “Bold! Visionary! Brave” for rejecting the proposal. ABC News’s July 2015 follow-up recounts the reaction and the founders’ remarks.
What “blew up” means in the evidence
Short-term audience growth
ABC News reported in July 2015 that Coffee Meets Bagel’s user base had more than doubled since its January Shark Tank appearance. This is the clearest reported measure of the immediate post-show effect. It supports describing the app as having gained users and visibility after the broadcast, but it is not a measure of revenue, profitability, or long-term company value.

Relationship figures were founder-reported
The same follow-up attributed additional outcome figures to the sisters: about 500 couples per week, more than 200 marriages, and 20,000 relationships. ABC’s account did not establish these as independently audited counts, so they should be understood as claims the founders made at the time, not independently verified outcomes.
Growth did not verify the pitch targets
The reported user increase is distinct from the pitch-era financial projections. The $1 million revenue figure for 2014 was a forecast, and $10 million for 2015 was a plan; the contemporaneous reporting cited here does not confirm either as an achieved result. Nor do the sources establish current independent user, revenue, profitability, or valuation figures. The record supports a strong short-term post-broadcast bump, not a complete account of the company’s later trajectory.

How the app was described then—and how the company describes it now
In its July 2015 account, ABC described a daily “Bagel,” a 24-hour Like-or-Pass period, private chat after a mutual like, and matching informed by Facebook friends and friends-of-friends. Those are details of the service as reported in 2015; they should not be assumed to describe the app’s current mechanics.
Coffee Meets Bagel’s current About Us page presents the service as a curated dating app for people seeking serious relationships. It describes daily curated batches, profiles that foreground values, education, interests and family plans, and icebreakers and chat limits intended to encourage conversations to move offline. The company identifies Arum Kang as CEO and co-founder and says it began in 2012. This is the company’s own current positioning, not independent evidence of comparative performance or user outcomes.
