George Clooney, Rande Gerber, and Mike Meldman created Casamigos in 2013 as a tequila they wanted to drink and share with friends. Diageo agreed to acquire the brand in 2017 for up to $1 billion—but that headline figure included a performance-linked earn-out, not just cash paid at closing.
How did George Clooney start Casamigos?
Casamigos began in 2013 with Clooney, entrepreneur Rande Gerber, and real-estate developer Mike Meldman. The founders described the idea as making a house tequila for themselves and their friends. In Diageo’s June 2017 announcement, they said the project had grown from “a friendship and an idea to create the best tasting, smoothest tequila as our own house tequila to drink and share with friends.” Diageo’s announcement attributed that description to the three founders.
The same release called Casamigos the “fastest growing super-premium tequila.” That is the founders’ characterization as quoted by Diageo, not an independently established ranking. Diageo also described the brand as having an “authentic brand identity” and a “smooth and accessible taste profile”; those are company positioning statements, not independent tasting findings.
How much did George Clooney sell Casamigos for?
Diageo announced in June 2017 that it would acquire Casamigos for an initial $700 million, with up to $300 million more possible through a performance-linked earn-out over ten years. The maximum stated transaction value was therefore $1 billion. The earn-out was contingent, so the announcement does not establish that the full amount was ultimately paid.

What the deal does—and does not—tell us about Casamigos’ growth
The public announcements establish the founders, their stated origin story, the deal’s initial and contingent components, and its completion. They do not provide an independently sourced pre-acquisition sales history, identify which marketing channels drove growth, or show whether Clooney’s celebrity was the decisive factor. They also do not state each founder’s ownership share or individual proceeds. The transaction’s maximum value is clear; a detailed account of how the brand grew or how much any one founder received is not established by these announcements.
