He then proved unusually adept at moving between intense crime dramas and broad comedy. Celebrity Net Worth estimated his fortune at $50 million in a page updated June 9, 2026, but that is a third-party estimate—not a figure Pesci has publicly disclosed or an audited account.
How Joe Pesci found his way back to acting
Pesci was born in Newark, New Jersey, on February 9, 1943. His performing career began early: Biography.com says he appeared on radio at age four and was a regular on the television program Star Time Kids by 1953. He also pursued music under the name Joe Ritchie, releasing the LP Little Joe Sure Can Sing. (Biography.com)
His first Hollywood effort did not lead to steady acting work. He left the business, returned east, and took jobs that included working for a mason in Las Vegas and managing an Italian restaurant in the Bronx, where he also sang for diners. In a 1994 Los Angeles Times interview, Pesci described the frustration of that early period and his eventual shift in expectations: “It wasn’t until I came back (East)–till I quit–that I realized I just wanted to be a working actor, and I wound up being successful.” (Los Angeles Times, March 30, 1994)
Why Raging Bull was his breakthrough
Pesci’s return to film came after Robert De Niro noticed his performance in the low-budget crime film The Death Collector and brought it to director Martin Scorsese’s attention. De Niro and Scorsese invited him to read for Raging Bull (1980), in which he played Joey LaMotta, the brother of De Niro’s boxer. Pesci recalled in 1994: “Then I got a call from Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese asking me to read for ‘Raging Bull.’ They’d seen me in (the B-movie) ‘Death Collector’ and liked me.” (Los Angeles Times; Biography.com)

The role established a lasting creative connection with De Niro and Scorsese, but Pesci did not simply repeat it. His subsequent work included the comedy Easy Money, the historical crime drama Once Upon a Time in America, and the action film Lethal Weapon 2. The range of those parts helped make him recognizable beyond a single character type.
How crime roles and comedy made him a star
In 1990, Pesci reached two sharply different audiences. In Scorsese’s Goodfellas, he played volatile mobster Tommy DeVito, a performance that won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. That same year, he played burglar Harry in the family comedy Home Alone. The contrast captures a central part of his screen appeal: he could bring menace and unpredictability to crime stories, then turn those qualities into comic force.

My Cousin Vinny (1992) made him the comic lead, as an inexperienced New York lawyer defending two young men in Alabama. He returned to Scorsese and De Niro’s crime-film world in Casino (1995). These films show why Pesci’s career is broader than a sequence of mob parts: he handled supporting dramatic roles, a comic lead, and family comedy within a concentrated period of major visibility.
His awards and selective later returns
The Academy Award for Goodfellas was a win. The Golden Globes’ official record lists Pesci as a Best Supporting Actor nominee for Raging Bull in the 1981 awards cycle, GoodFellas in 1991, and The Irishman in 2020; those are nominations, not Golden Globe wins. (Golden Globes; Biography.com)

One notable return was Scorsese’s The Irishman (2019), which brought him back into a crime drama with De Niro. In that 1994 interview, he also resisted the idea of Hollywood as a social ambition, saying, “I’m not into that Hollywood stuff.” His own account presents success less as a pursuit of celebrity than as a chance to keep working as an actor. The same page lists reported pay for selected movies: approximately $1 million each for Goodfellas and Home Alone, $3.5 million for Jimmy Hollywood (1994), and approximately $3 million for Casino (1995). These are publisher-attributed salary claims, and the page does not provide a contract citation for those line items. They are not a complete earnings history.
Selected movie pay cannot establish a person’s lifetime earnings or current wealth. The available figures do not comprehensively account for taxes, expenses, investments, other assets, or liabilities, so adding the reported salaries together would not verify the $50 million estimate.
