Gigi Hadid’s rise came through a combination of early exposure, a deliberate return to modeling, influential editorial support, and a fast succession of runway, campaign, and cover opportunities in 2014 and 2015. Social media helped make her personality visible, but the record does not show that follower numbers alone made her career. Her ascent was neither an overnight discovery nor an uninterrupted childhood career.

How did Gigi Hadid get discovered?

Hadid has said Guess co-founder Paul Marciano noticed her when she was about two, leading to Baby Guess and later Guess Kids work. That early start did not mean she modeled continuously through childhood. She stepped away to concentrate on school and activities including horseback riding, club volleyball, and musical theater. Vogue’s 2025 retrospective says her mother wanted her to have time for sports, friends, and school before returning to modeling as an older teenager. Vogue’s 2025 profile places that pause within a more complicated story of early exposure and later fame.

In 2013, Hadid signed a professional contract with IMG Models and moved to New York to study criminal psychology at the New School. As modeling work grew, it became harder to fit around her class schedule. Vogue’s 2025 account also says she advocated for herself within IMG after feeling that an early agent was not taking her seriously. The pattern was not simply “discovered, then famous”: early familiarity gave way to a period focused on other priorities, followed by a deliberate professional return.

What was Gigi Hadid’s big break?

Hadid has credited her CR Fashion Book cover, created under fashion editor Carine Roitfeld, as her big break. Biography.com dates the cover to spring 2014 and records Hadid’s New York Fashion Week debut walking for Desigual in February that year, followed by a Tom Ford Eyewear campaign in July. The opportunities arrived close together, giving her visibility across editorial, runway, and commercial fashion. Biography.com’s career timeline provides those dated milestones.

Contemporary coverage also highlighted Roitfeld’s backing. In January 2015, Roitfeld told Vogue, “I knew immediately that she was going to be a star.” That is evidence of an influential editor’s early confidence in Hadid, not proof that one endorsement alone created her career. The cover and the support around it mattered because they helped lead into a wider set of bookings.

Why did her career accelerate in 2014 and 2015?

She moved between commercial and high-fashion work

Hadid’s work crossed categories that are often discussed separately. In early 2015, Vogue noted her Tom Ford campaigns and Chanel runway appearance alongside a Maybelline contract and work with Guess and Victoria’s Secret Pink. Hadid described this range as part of her appeal, saying she could work across “high fashion versus commercial.” The mix gave her both fashion-industry visibility and a broad consumer-facing presence. Vogue’s January 2015 profile documents that cluster of work.

Editorial, runway, and campaign opportunities reinforced one another

One booking can introduce a model to new audiences, but Hadid’s momentum is better understood as several kinds of work accumulating in a short period. Editorial covers made her recognizable to fashion readers; runway appearances placed her in front of designers and industry audiences; campaigns connected her to global brands. British Vogue named her its January 2016 cover star in December 2015 and noted her Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show debut. British Vogue’s announcement captures how quickly her profile had expanded.

Industry advocates and timing helped

Roitfeld’s support is visible in contemporaneous coverage. In her 2025 retrospective, Hadid also recalled finding a stronger advocate at IMG and described early support from designer Donatella Versace, who said, “Gigi for me has that same spirit.” Hadid interpreted her timing as important: she felt fashion was becoming more receptive to models whose personalities were visible rather than distant and untouchable. These are informed perspectives from people involved, not a measurable formula for success.

Did Instagram make Gigi Hadid a supermodel?

Social media helped amplify Hadid’s visibility, but it is too simple to say Instagram made her career. In January 2015, she told Vogue that social platforms let models show personality and connect with people: “Back in the day, models were just another face. But social media has given people a voice and not just another face.” She also said this could make it easier to become a brand ambassador.

British Vogue reported that Hadid had 1.6 million Instagram followers at the time of its December 2015 interview; that is a dated figure, not a current count or evidence of what caused particular bookings. Hadid pushed back on the idea that followers alone secured work: “But I don’t think I just get hired because I have Instagram followers. My jobs are also what gets me followers.” The evidence supports a two-way relationship: work increased attention, while social media made her personality and audience more visible to brands. It does not establish how much either factor contributed. British Vogue’s 2015 interview records her comments.

What does “one of the top supermodels” mean in her case?

There is no single objective ranking in the cited coverage that measures who counts as a top supermodel or assigns a score to Hadid’s rise. Her prominent status is better grounded in the breadth of her documented work: major-house runway appearances, high-profile campaigns and beauty work, magazine covers, and later industry honors. Biography.com says she became Tommy Hilfiger’s global brand ambassador in 2016, collaborated on a capsule collection, and received the British Fashion Awards’ International Model of the Year honor and Daily Front Row’s Model of the Year.

That evidence supports describing her as one of the leading models of her generation, while keeping the label “top supermodel” as a broad cultural description rather than a formal title. Awards and visibility mark recognition; they do not prove that any one element caused her success.

What did rapid fame cost?

Hadid’s 2025 Vogue retrospective describes the pressures that accompanied her early visibility, including privacy invasions, intense scrutiny, and commentary about her body. She recalled periods of isolating herself and summarized some of the lessons of early access with the words, “I learned the hard way.” This context matters: a career built on public recognition can also mean losing control over personal boundaries and being judged on appearance.

In 2015, Vogue reported that a post in which Hadid responded to body-shaming criticism received more than 300,000 likes. That was a dated engagement count tied to one post, not a measure of public opinion overall. It illustrates how social platforms could give her a way to answer criticism directly as well as intensify scrutiny.
