Linda Perry said she and Sara Gilbert remained close after separating, continuing to see themselves as a family and working together as parents. What Linda Perry said about their relationship
In a June 2024 interview with PEOPLE, Perry described an ongoing bond with Gilbert despite their separation. “We’re never not going to be a family,” she said. Perry added, “There doesn’t feel like much of a separation because we’re always together,” and called their relationship “really a beautiful relationship.”

Those are Perry’s descriptions of their connection, not an independent account of every private interaction. She also said they were aligned in parenting their child, Rhodes, and characterized Gilbert as her best friend.
What their reported custody arrangement included
In October 2021, Us Weekly reported terms from court documents it said it had obtained. The report said Perry and Gilbert had joint legal custody and shared parenting time equally. It also said their mediated agreement provided that neither would pay child support.

The same report said they separately settled financial matters, including assets and spousal support. It did not disclose the terms of that financial agreement. The reporting does not show that mediation, equal parenting time, or any specific legal term caused the pair to remain close.
How the separation and divorce unfolded
- December 2019: Gilbert filed for legal separation, citing irreconcilable differences, according to contemporaneous reports from ET and ITV. The initial reports said custody details were not yet available.
- October 2021: Us Weekly reported a partial judgment and the custody and financial terms described above.
- June 2024: Perry spoke to PEOPLE about their closeness and parenting relationship. The story also covered Gilbert’s appearance in Perry’s documentary, which premiered at Tribeca on June 6, 2024.
- December 19, 2024: Us Weekly later reported that the divorce was finalized on that date, citing court documents.
The timing is not described consistently in the coverage. PEOPLE’s June 2024 story said the divorce was finalized in 2021, while Us Weekly’s later, court-document-based report gives December 19, 2024. Without the underlying docket, the distinction is best stated as reported: a 2021 partial judgment was followed, according to Us Weekly, by finalization in December 2024.

Gilbert’s words in Perry’s documentary
PEOPLE’s June 2024 story also quoted Gilbert speaking in Perry’s documentary: “I think people gravitate towards Linda since she’s authentic.” This was Gilbert’s comment in the documentary, not a separate interview with PEOPLE.
