Manmohan Singh said economics first drew him because it asked why some countries were poor and others rich. In college, he studied economics alongside political science and took part in societies, debate and other campus activities. His later training at Cambridge deepened his economics education; the available accounts describe student civic engagement, not party membership.

Why economics appealed to Singh

In a recollection reported by Scroll, Singh connected his interest in economics to poverty and differences in national wealth: “I was always interested in issues of poverty, why some countries are poor, why others are rich. And I was told that economics is the subject which asks these questions.” He studied economic theory and the Indian economy, pursuing questions about how economies worked and why countries experienced different levels of wealth.

His earlier college years combined economics with campus life

According to Scroll, Singh returned to college in September 1948 and entered a humanities stream that included economics, political science, mathematics, English and French. He completed his intermediate examination in 1950 at the top of the university, the account reports.

His interests extended beyond coursework. Scroll says he joined the Economics Society and Political Science Society, took part in a debating club, edited the college magazine and served as president of the UN Club. These activities show an active engagement with public and political ideas on campus. They do not establish that he joined a political party as a student.

Cambridge deepened his economics education

In 1955, aged 23, Singh went to St John’s College, Cambridge, to study economics on a scholarship from Punjab University, according to the University of Cambridge. He completed his final examinations in less than two years, earning First Class Honours in 1957, the university says.

Cambridge identifies economists Joan Robinson and Nicholas Kaldor among the teachers who shaped his studies. Singh later recalled Robinson as a brilliant teacher who challenged him to “think the unthinkable.” After he earned a First in his preliminary examinations, he was invited to join the Political Economy Club. He also described Cambridge’s formative influence in a statement reproduced by the university: “In many important ways, the University of Cambridge made me.”

Student political interest came before his government career

Singh’s college activities indicate an intellectual and civic interest in politics, but they should not be confused with a documented start in party politics. His academic societies, debating and campus roles provide evidence of engagement with political ideas; they do not show party membership.

His formal studies continued after Cambridge. The Prime Minister of India profile records his Cambridge economics degree in 1957 and his D.Phil. in economics from Nuffield College, Oxford, in 1962. Nuffield identifies Ian Little as his doctoral supervisor and places Singh’s entry into government roles in the 1970s. This sequence distinguishes his student interests and academic formation from his later public career.
