Yes. Ryder played Rachel Green’s former sorority sister in “The One With Rachel’s Big Kiss.” The character had been romantically involved with Rachel during college, and the episode’s story centered on their kiss.
ABC News reported on April 19, 2001, that the episode was scheduled to air April 27. In its contemporary preview, ABC News described the premise and announced airdate. TV Guide’s April 19 preview characterized the college incident as a boozy kiss and noted that the episode would compete with Survivor: The Australian Outback.
Why was the guest role so prominent in the coverage?
Contemporary coverage presented Ryder’s casting and the same-sex kiss storyline as promotional hooks in a competitive television schedule. ABC News placed the episode in the context of the season’s sweeps period, while TV Guide framed the plot as a ratings stunt. That tells us how the episode was promoted and discussed at the time; it does not establish whether the episode gained or lost viewers, or whether the publicity helped Ryder’s career.

What was happening in Ryder’s career before the episode?
A Guardian profile published January 3, 2001—nearly four months before the episode aired—said Ryder’s star had begun to wane. That was the writer’s critical assessment, not a measured career statistic. Its timing matters: the article shows that concerns about her film career existed before the Friends appearance, so the cameo cannot account for the start of that narrative.
What did Ryder later say about her career difficulties?
In a 2016 TIME interview, Ryder reflected on the risk of stepping away from acting: “I took some years off, and I didn’t realize that was very dangerous in terms of my career.” She also described being associated with ingénue roles after she felt she had aged out of them: “People just thought of me as this person from Reality Bites, or whatever. My thirties were a little bit tough, for various reasons. But I do remember work-wise, people thought of me as the ingénue. But I was too old for that.” These are Ryder’s retrospective explanations of challenges she experienced; she did not identify the Friends episode as their cause.

A retrospective TIME profile connected Ryder’s lengthy absence from work with the period following her 2001 arrest. A 2009 Guardian profile included Friends among several comic appearances in a broader return to public life. Neither account isolates the sitcom guest role as the reason for her later career trajectory.
