Randy Travis did not record the finished lead vocal in a conventional new singing session. Instead, producer Kyle Lehning used a previously recorded demo by singer James Dupré as the performance guide, then ran it through a proprietary AI model built from recordings of Travis’s voice. Lehning and engineer Casey Wood selected and edited the generated material to shape the final vocal.
What supplied the song’s performance?
“Where That Came From,” written by Scotty Emerick and John Scott Sherrill, had been recorded by James Dupré but not released. Lehning remembered the song and felt it suited Travis’s vocal style. Dupré’s demo supplied the underlying performance: its phrasing and timing were transformed by the model rather than replaced by a newly sung Travis lead.
The single was released on May 3, 2024. Warner Music Nashville billed it as Travis’s first new music in more than a decade. The label’s announcement described the project as an effort to give Travis his voice back; that is the label’s framing of the work.
How was the AI vocal made?
- Build models from Travis recordings. According to Lehning in Associated Press reporting, developers in London created two proprietary models: one based on 12 vocal stems and another based on 42 stems spanning Travis’s career from 1985 to 2013.
- Process Dupré’s demo. Lehning fed the demo vocal into the model. He estimated that analysis took about five minutes. He also estimated the first output was “probably 70, 75% what you hear now”; that was his subjective description, not a measured accuracy score.
- Select and refine the output. Lehning and engineer Casey Wood chose material across the models and adjusted details including vibrato speed and phrase timing. The label said the team spent months working on the vocals and paid close attention to individual notes.
Was Randy Travis really singing the finished vocal?
Not in the usual sense of recording a new lead-vocal take. The performance began with Dupré’s demo, while Travis’s recorded voice provided the basis for the model’s vocal sound. The finished part was generated and then shaped by Lehning and Wood. The sources do not specify the model’s technical architecture beyond those reported details, so they do not establish how it worked internally or provide an independently validated measure of its resemblance to Travis.

Travis and Lehning remained involved in the project, according to Warner Music Nashville. In the label’s announcement, Travis said, “Eleven years ago I never thought I would be able to have a hand in music production of any kind.” That involvement is distinct from personally singing the finished vocal.
What the collaborators said about the process
Lehning told the AP, “I never even thought about another song,” and described Travis as “a laid-back singer.” Mary Travis told the AP, “All I ever wanted since the day of a stroke was to hear that voice again.” Warner Music Nashville co-chair and co-president Cris Lacy described the project in the label announcement this way: “AI for good would be giving Randy Travis his voice back.”
