Jim Morrison’s recorded official cause of death was heart failure. The official account places his death in the bathtub of his Paris apartment on July 3, 1971. But no autopsy was performed, so the record does not independently establish the precise medical mechanism. A later claim that Morrison died of a heroin overdose in a nightclub remains disputed, not a proven finding.
What the official record says
A reproduced U.S. Department of State consular report lists Morrison’s date of death as July 3, 1971, at 5 p.m., his address as 17 rue Beautreillis in Paris, and the certified cause as “Heart Failure.” It records his age as 27 and his burial at Père Lachaise Cemetery on July 7. The document is a reproduction hosted by a secondary archive, rather than the original government file: the reproduced consular report.

The City of Paris describes Morrison as having been found dead in the bathtub at the apartment he shared with Pamela Courson. Its account says police concluded he had suffered cardiac arrest after hearing from Courson and filmmaker Agnès Varda, and that no autopsy was performed: City of Paris account. The Associated Press likewise reports heart failure as the recorded cause and notes the absence of an autopsy: AP report.
“Heart failure” is the official recorded label, not proof of a specific underlying heart condition or a confirmed overdose. Without a postmortem examination, the record cannot establish the exact biological cause.

How the nightclub-overdose story arose
In 2007, Sam Bernett, a former manager of the Rock and Roll Circus nightclub, alleged that Morrison died in a nightclub toilet after a heroin overdose and that two men carried him back to his apartment. The Los Angeles Times reported Bernett’s account alongside photographer Patrick Chauvel’s recollection that he helped men carrying Morrison on a staircase: Los Angeles Times report.
That account conflicts with the version Courson gave in statements reflected in police records. She said she and Morrison went to a movie and dinner, listened to records, went to sleep, and that Morrison later felt ill and took a bath, where she found him dead. The City of Paris characterizes the nightclub-overdose story as a rumor circulating at the time, while identifying the bathtub account as the official version.

Bernett’s later allegation and Chauvel’s recollection do not amount to a medical finding. Because there was no autopsy, the available record cannot resolve the conflict by establishing where or how Morrison’s death occurred beyond the official account.
What is known about Morrison’s time in Paris
Morrison had been in Paris for about four months and, according to the City of Paris, hoped to focus on writing. He lived with Courson at 17 rue Beautreillis, where the official account says he died. That context helps explain why he was in Paris; it does not prove either version of his death.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
- Recorded cause: heart failure, as stated in the reproduced consular report.
- Official account of the circumstances: Morrison died in the bathtub of his Paris apartment, with Courson and Varda among those whose statements police heard.
- Medical certainty: no autopsy was performed, so the precise underlying cause was not independently confirmed after death.
- Alternative story: Bernett later alleged a nightclub heroin overdose, but that account remains disputed and is not established as fact.
