In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, T’Chaka—T’Challa’s father and Wakanda’s king—is killed in a bombing in Vienna during Captain America: Civil War (2016). T’Challa first believes Bucky Barnes is responsible, but Helmut Zemo orchestrated the events behind the attack.
What happens in the MCU film?
The bombing takes place during the signing of the Sokovia Accords in Vienna. T’Chaka is among those killed. His son T’Challa pursues Bucky Barnes, who is initially blamed for the attack, seeking revenge. The film later reveals Zemo’s role in setting events in motion. TIME’s 2022 recap of the MCU story describes the Vienna attack and T’Challa’s response.

How is T’Chaka’s death different in the comics?
In the comics account, T’Chaka is killed during Ulysses Klaw’s attack on Wakanda as Klaw seeks vibranium. This differs from the Vienna bombing in the film continuity; the two versions should not be combined into a single account. Marvel’s overview of Black Panther’s expanded origin and the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s history of Black Panther describe Klaw’s role.
Why does T’Chaka’s death matter to T’Challa?
In the comics, T’Chaka’s death shapes T’Challa’s view of Wakanda’s relationship with the outside world. Marvel’s interview with Rise of the Black Panther artist Paul Renaud includes his explanation that T’Challa feels Wakandans must engage with the outside world because his father died when they did not know it well enough.
