What changed after the series came out?
Netflix released the scripted, nine-episode series in September 2024. Its release put the decades-old case back in headlines and prompted renewed debate about culpability, victimization, sexual abuse, and how a new generation understands the brothers’ story, according to Netflix Tudum’s coverage and its series guide.
That is the clearest documented impact: more attention and conversation. The reporting places the show alongside other documentaries and coverage that renewed interest in the case; it does not isolate the drama’s effect from that larger media moment.
Did the show lead to a resentencing review?
The timeline shows overlap, not proof of cause. On October 16, 2024, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said it was reviewing the cases for possible resentencing. The office also said its legal team had met with family members to hear their concerns. Its announcement did not credit the series for prompting the review. Read the office’s October 16 statement.

An Associated Press report published November 3, 2024, described the renewed attention as following two documentaries and a scripted drama. That account supports seeing Monsters as part of a wider resurgence in coverage, not as the established reason for a prosecutor’s decision. It cannot show what would have happened without the series or measure how much influence any one program had.
What the series dramatizes—and what the case claims
Netflix describes Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story as a scripted dramatization, not a documentary or transcript of the proceedings. Its ending explainer identifies it as a nine-episode series. Scenes and dialogue should therefore be understood as dramatic storytelling, not independent proof of contested events.

The public dispute over the case includes competing accounts. Netflix’s guide to the series summarizes the prosecution’s argument that the brothers killed their parents to inherit family wealth, while the brothers have maintained that abuse and fear were central to their actions. Those claims should remain attributed to the parties; a dramatization does not resolve them.
What did the series’ co-creator say about its impact?
In a September 27, 2024 interview with Netflix Tudum, co-creator Ryan Murphy said the series “informed an entire generation about that case and launched millions of conversations about sexual abuse.” That is Murphy’s assessment, not an independently measured count of conversations or evidence that audience understanding or legal decisions changed. The interview also records his views about the family’s response and the series’ potential usefulness to the brothers; those are opinions, not settled findings.

What happened in the later habeas proceedings?
In February 2025, the Los Angeles County DA’s Office announced that it had filed an informal response to the brothers’ May 2023 habeas petition and published an educational resource about criminal procedure. In August 2025, the office said it had filed a detailed response opposing the brothers’ request for a new trial. These are prosecutorial filings and positions, not court rulings.
