Jackie Chan was among the performers pushed toward that role—but he did not become a legend by copying Lee. After an unsuccessful period in Lee’s shadow, Chan broke through with a comic, acrobatic style of kung fu that audiences could recognize as his own.
Chan and Lee crossed paths before the succession talk
Chan had a small part in Enter the Dragon (1973), where he appeared opposite Lee. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recounts that the two became friends after Lee accidentally struck Chan with a stick during a fight scene. Their connection was real, but it did not mean Lee chose Chan as his successor or that Chan inherited Lee’s place with audiences.
Lee’s death created pressure to find a new martial-arts star
After Lee died in 1973, Hong Kong producers and the film industry sought another major martial-arts draw. The Academy says Chan was among the stars pushed as a possible next big name. Chan later joked about performers imitating Lee’s fighting style and described spending years looking for a style of his own.
That distinction matters: Lee’s death shaped the opportunity and expectations around Chan, but it did not by itself make him famous. Lee’s screen persona was intense and formidable; Chan would eventually be known for a different combination of martial arts, slapstick, and physical-comedy timing.

The Lee-copying phase did not establish Chan
Biography.com summarizes Chan’s early period with director Lo Wei, who had worked with Lee: Chan starred in several kung fu films, most of which were unsuccessful. Chan wanted to move beyond Lee’s mold and create a distinct screen image. This is a secondary-source account of the period, not evidence that Lee personally selected Chan or that Chan was a direct successor.
A change in production helped create a new direction
The Hong Kong Film Archive’s oral-history search result describes how producer Ng See-yuen borrowed Chan for productions while Chan remained under contract with Lo Wei. It also characterizes the production company’s young team as discussing scenes collectively. That account offers a glimpse of a different working environment, though it does not establish every detail of how Chan’s new persona developed.

Why 1978 became Chan’s breakthrough
Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow
The Academy identifies Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow as Chan’s first major breakthrough. His official filmography lists the film in 1978, the year Chan began to emerge from the successor role into a star with his own screen identity.
Drunken Master
Drunken Master followed in 1978, consolidating that turn. Sony describes the film as combining intricate martial arts with Chan’s trademark slapstick comedy. The Academy says Chan cited silent-film comedians Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd as inspirations, bringing physical skill together with comic timing.

The comic approach was not a decorative extra to the fighting. It changed what an action scene could do: Chan could be a capable fighter while also taking hits, stumbling, improvising, and making danger funny. The result was not Lee’s formidable screen image repeated with a new face, but a distinct persona built around athletic comedy.

Chan’s Hong Kong breakthrough came in 1978; his Hollywood breakthrough arrived later. The Academy points to Rush Hour (1998) as the film that made his Hollywood career take off. Those milestones belong to separate stages of his career, rather than one sudden leap following Lee’s death.

Lee’s death helped create the opening, and the industry’s search for a successor placed Chan under the comparison. Chan became a kung fu legend in movies by outgrowing that comparison: he combined martial-arts ability with slapstick, precise physical timing, and a screen persona audiences could identify as his own.
