Its source chain runs from L. Frank Baum’s 1900 book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, through Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked and the stage musical, to the 2024 film adaptation of that musical. The 1939 movie is an important part of the story’s cultural context, but it is not the sole source of Wicked.
How the stories are connected
Wicked uses Oz and familiar figures from its stories, then shifts the focus to the witch remembered as Dorothy’s enemy. Instead of taking the familiar good-versus-evil labels at face value, it asks how the future Wicked Witch of the West came to be seen as wicked.
The creative lineage matters: Baum established Oz; Maguire reimagined it around the Witch; the musical adapted and reshaped Maguire’s novel; and the 2024 film adapted the musical. Each version is its own work, not a verbatim retelling of the one before it.
From Baum’s book to the Wicked film
| Version | What it contributes | How to describe the connection |
|---|---|---|
| The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), by L. Frank Baum | The foundational Oz setting and story. | Baum’s book is the original literary source for Oz. Library of Congress; PBS. |
| The Wizard of Oz (1939), MGM film | A major screen adaptation whose imagery became part of Oz’s popular cultural legacy. | It is an influential reference, not the only source behind Wicked. Library of Congress; Oxford Academic. |
| Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995), by Gregory Maguire | A revisionist novel that gives the future Witch a backstory and centers her perspective. | Maguire reimagines Oz; the novel is the source for the stage musical. NBCUniversal; Library of Congress. |
| Wicked stage musical (Broadway, 2003) | An adaptation of Maguire’s novel, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. | The musical reshapes the novel for the stage. PBS; Wicked the Musical (UK). |
| Wicked (2024 film) | A screen adaptation of the stage musical. | The film adapts the musical, which itself came from Maguire’s novel. Universal Pictures. |
Who is Elphaba in The Wizard of Oz?
Elphaba is the name Maguire gave the future Wicked Witch of the West. It is not a name used for the Witch in Baum’s original novel or the familiar 1939 film, according to the Library of Congress. Maguire’s choice makes the character a person with a history and perspective, rather than simply the villain Dorothy encounters.
#1 Best Overall
The musical develops Elphaba’s relationship with Glinda as a central part of its account of how their paths diverge. Their friendship and contrasting destinies help frame the story’s question of who gets called good or wicked. NBCUniversal’s producer interview discusses that relationship and the show’s development.
Is Wicked a prequel to The Wizard of Oz?
In the musical and its film adaptation, much of the story takes place before Dorothy arrives in Oz, so “prequel” is a useful shorthand for that part of the story. It is not a complete description of every version or plot detail: the musical’s second act connects more directly with the familiar Wizard of Oz timeline. TIME’s 2024 explanation describes the first film installment as using the musical’s first act and notes Oz connections such as the Yellow Brick Road and flying monkeys. Those details concern the musical and film, not every event in Maguire’s novel. TIME, November 22, 2024.
Rank #2
Did Wicked come from the 1939 movie?
No—not in the direct adaptation chain. Maguire’s novel is based on Oz as established by Baum and engages with the broader legacy of Oz adaptations. The musical adapts Maguire’s novel, and the 2024 movie adapts the musical. The 1939 film is significant cultural context, and scholarship discusses Wicked’s resonances with both Baum’s book and that film, but it is inaccurate to say the film alone is the source of Wicked. Library of Congress; Oxford Academic.

For the Witch-centered literary retelling that inspired the musical, read Maguire’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. For the foundational Oz story, read Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. They are different books: Baum’s is the source-world, while Maguire’s reworks it from a new point of view. The stage musical and 2024 film are further adaptations, each with its own choices.
