Barenaked Ladies did not literally make a million dollars from “If I Had a Million Dollars.” The title’s million-dollar idea is the song’s playful premise: its narrator imagines buying a loved one extravagant, peculiar gifts. How Ed Robertson came up with the song
In a 2019 interview with Forbes, Robertson recalled that he was 18 when he wrote the song. He was returning from music camp, where he had been a counselor, and used the long bus ride to entertain the children.
“I wrote that song on a bus on the way home from music camp where I was a counselor. I was just trying to keep the kids from going crazy on the long two-and-a-half hour bus ride home.”
Robertson said the first version included specific, silly details about things that had happened at camp. As he worked on the idea, he thought it might connect with people if he found the right amusing things for the narrator to talk about. His recollection frames the song’s beginning as a practical bit of camp-bus entertainment that grew into a broader comic premise—not as a plan to write a hit.

What the million-dollar fantasy is doing
The narrator imagines what he could buy for someone he loves if he had a million dollars. The humor comes from the gap between the grand promise and the unexpected, sometimes absurd details of the imagined gifts. Money supplies the setup for an over-the-top romantic gesture, while the odd specifics keep it playful rather than solemn.
That is a reading of the song’s premise, not a documented statement of an officially confirmed meaning. The title should not be mistaken for a claim about the band’s earnings or a literal account of its finances.

Why the origin story fits the song
Robertson’s account connects the song’s silliness to the circumstances in which he first tried it out: he was entertaining children with recognizable camp details. The finished premise broadens that impulse into an imagined shopping spree for a loved one.
