In English-language anime fandom, a waifu is a fictional female character a fan feels especially attached to—sometimes romantically, sometimes playfully or ironically. The word traces a loop from English wife to Japanese ワイフ (waifu) and back into English fandom slang. Azumanga Daioh is often credited with helping popularize the term, but the available evidence does not establish who coined it or when.
What “waifu” means in anime fandom
A fan may call a character their waifu to express fondness, admiration, or an imagined romantic bond. The intensity varies: some use it as an affectionate joke, while others use it earnestly. It describes a fan’s relationship to a fictional character, not a formal category of character or a claim about how other fans should feel.
The term is sometimes associated with character merchandise, including body pillows and resin figures. That is one expression of fandom, not a requirement or a habit shared by everyone who uses the word.
From English “wife” to Japanese ワイフ and back
The word’s path is a linguistic loop. English wife was borrowed into Japanese as ワイフ, written in katakana and romanized as waifu. English-language anime fans then adopted that Japanese form and gave it a specialized fandom sense: a beloved or imagined spouse-like attachment to a fictional character. Japanese with Anime explains this distinction between the loanword’s literal Japanese use and the English fandom meaning in its explanation of “waifu”.

- Furyu Corporation presents, within the Bicute Bunnies collection, the figure of Albedo Black Color Version. It measures 30 cm and is based on the character from the anime "Overlord".
A related Japanese expression is 俺の嫁 (ore no yome), roughly “my bride” or “my wife.” It is a parallel expression, not necessarily a perfect translation in every context. For a male favorite character, English-language fans may use husbando; an academic discussion notes that the term’s precise coinage path is difficult to verify.
Why “Azumanga Daioh” is part of the origin story
The familiar popularization story points to Azumanga Daioh. In a scene involving teacher Kimura and a photograph of a woman, he answers “mai waifu”—glossed as “my wife.” Japanese with Anime transcribes the phrase from the manga scene; it should be understood as a brief line attributed to that scene, not as independently verified official subtitle wording.

The manga scene is reported in Volume 2, chapter “January,” page 10. The manga appeared in 2000; the anime followed in 2002. The scene’s joke makes the phrase memorable, and the series is commonly cited as an exposure point for Western anime fans. A community answer on Anime & Manga Stack Exchange calls this the prevailing account, while acknowledging that it cannot show the word was unused before the anime.
What the timeline can—and cannot—tell us
Dictionary.com reports evidence of the fandom sense by at least 2006 and points to a 2007 Urban Dictionary entry. The Stack Exchange discussion also cites a May 2006 forum example. These are traces of use, not proof of the first use, the exact date of coinage, or a direct causal link between the show and the word’s spread.

So “popularized” is the safer description than “coined.” Azumanga Daioh helped make the phrase visible in a widely repeated origin story; the sources do not establish that its creators invented the English fandom term. Nor do the available sources quantify how many fans use “waifu” or show that it is more popular than other fandom terms.
