Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth appear in Wicked as performers in Wiz-O-Mania, the Emerald City show within the film—not as Elphaba and Glinda. Their cameo is a tribute to the Broadway stars woven into the expanded “One Short Day” sequence. The documented wire-assisted, blue-screen flight belongs to Cynthia Erivo’s separate “Defying Gravity” scene; there is no verified evidence that Menzel or Chenoweth were flown for their appearance.
Where Menzel and Chenoweth appear
The cameos arrive during “One Short Day,” when Elphaba and Glinda visit the Emerald City. The film expands the number into Wiz-O-Mania, an in-world performance about the Wizard’s arrival in Oz and the history of the Grimmerie, the ancient book of enchantments. Menzel and Chenoweth play performers in that presentation, singing alongside Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman also appear in the extended sequence. TIME describes the performers’ roles and shared musical moment; the Los Angeles Times also identifies the cameo within the expanded sequence.
Why the cameo is a handoff, not a recasting
Menzel and Chenoweth originated Elphaba and Glinda in the Broadway production. In the film, they appear as Wiz-O-Mania performers, while Erivo and Grande remain the central witches. That choice gives the original stage leads a visible place in the film’s Oz without displacing the new leads. The tribute is built into the story’s Emerald City spectacle rather than presented as a second version of the characters.
What “gravity-defying” refers to—and what it does not
The phrase can suggest Elphaba’s flight in “Defying Gravity,” but that is a different scene from the cameo. The Los Angeles Times reports that Erivo rehearsed extensively for the flight, which was filmed on wires against a blue screen. She asked to sing live to an on-set audience to make the performance feel emotionally real. Visual-effects supervisor Pablo Helman said, “All the visual effects that we talked about had to do with storytelling,” and, “If you don’t start with the performances being truthful, you’ll never get it.” Those production details concern Erivo’s flight, not Menzel and Chenoweth’s Wiz-O-Mania appearance. The flight also has a separate dramatic arc. Director Jon M. Chu described a version in which Elphaba first fails to fly, then finds resolve through a connection to her younger self. That emotional turn helps make the eventual flight feel earned; it does not explain the cameo’s staging.
What is known about the cameo shoot
ComicBook.com reports that Chu said Menzel and Chenoweth secretly traveled to London and that the production had only a few hours on a rainy night to film their scene. This is Chu’s account as reported by a secondary publication, rather than independently verified production documentation. ComicBook.com’s report recounts the short, rainy-night shoot.

The Yahoo Entertainment headline associated with the “gravity-defying” phrasing is accessible only as an indexed headline and snippet; its article could not be retrieved. The available sources establish where the pair appear and what the separate flight sequence involved, but do not verify any special flying, suspension, or digital effect used for the cameo.
