The Penguin ends with Oz Cobb stronger in Gotham’s underworld and a Bat-Signal cutting through the sky. That points toward the next chapter of Matt Reeves’ Batman crime saga, but it does not reveal the plot of The Batman Part II. A second season remains possible, not confirmed.
What the finale shows—and what it leaves open
The ending offers two clear hooks: Batman’s signal appears over Gotham, and Sofia Falcone receives a letter from her half-sister, Selina Kyle. Both suggest stories that could continue beyond the series. Neither confirms which characters will appear in the sequel or what they will do.
The Bat-Signal points to Batman’s next chapter
The signal evokes Batman’s response to the criminal order Oz has consolidated. Finale coverage described the image as a launch into the second film, but it is best understood as a bridge in tone and story world—not as a preview of the sequel’s specific events. Yahoo Entertainment’s finale report covered that stage-setting.
Selina’s letter connects two characters
Sofia’s letter from Selina establishes a line of communication between the half-sisters. The series does not establish whether that connection will become part of The Batman Part II, so the letter is an open thread rather than a promise of either character’s return.

Oz’s rise is the most direct link to The Batman Part II
Oz ends the series in a stronger position in Gotham’s underworld. That ascent is the clearest handoff to the film: Matt Reeves and showrunner Lauren LeFranc have described the series as intentionally moving Oz’s story toward The Batman Part II. Reeves discussed the creative connection in a September 16, 2024 Forbes interview, and LeFranc later reiterated that the first season was meant to launch Oz into the movie in GamesRadar+’s report on season timing.
That creative intention does not establish the size of Oz’s role, the sequel’s plot, or how the film will use the events of the series. The original announcement describes The Penguin as an eight-episode DC Studios drama continuing Reeves’ The Batman crime saga; it confirms the series’ place in that larger story world, not a scene-by-scene account of what follows. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement provides the series description and episode count.

Is The Penguin season 2 happening?
There is no confirmed renewal established by the available statements. In a TVLine interview published November 10, 2024, LeFranc discussed her uncertainty about continuing the story while expressing enthusiasm for its fictional world. Her later comments indicate that, if a second season happens, it would have to follow the film. That is a timing condition, not an announcement that HBO has ordered another season.
The distinction matters: the show can be designed to lead into a movie while leaving room for more television, but a possible continuation is not the same as a renewal. No season-two release date or confirmed production plan follows from LeFranc’s comments.
