The Boys Season 4 made Splinter’s sauna gag with a photoreal prosthetic modeled on Rob Benedict, repeated performances in different positions, and visual-effects compositing. It was a practical-and-digital “step-and-repeat” effect—not one continuous take or a fully computer-generated sequence.
How the sauna scene was made
In Season 4, Episode 2, “Life Among the Septics,” Benedict plays Splinter, a supe who can divide into copies of himself. For the sauna gag, showrunner Eric Kripke told TVLine that production built a photoreal prosthetic butt modeled on Benedict. The prop let the scene repeat the action as Benedict moved through different positions.
Production VFX supervisor Stephan Fleet described the sauna work to The Art of VFX as “step-and-repeat” photography with the camera locked off. In practical terms, the setup allowed the production to film repeated performances from a fixed camera position and combine them into a shot where Splinter appears alongside his copies. The prosthetic supplied the physical element; visual effects assembled and refined the result.
What Benedict knew before taking the role
Kripke said he called Benedict before he accepted the part because he wanted to explain what Splinter would be doing. In the TVLine interview, Kripke recalled telling him, “Brother, here is exactly what this character is going to be doing. You have to be down for that. I don’t want you to be surprised.” Kripke said Benedict found it hilarious and agreed to take the role. The account establishes that he was briefed on the content beforehand; it does not establish what intimacy-coordination arrangements, if any, were used.

How the sauna effect differs from other Splinter sequences
The sauna gag used a relatively direct locked-camera approach. Other Splinter scenes had different production needs, so their methods should not be mistaken for the sauna workflow.
The press-conference cloning shot
VFX Voice reported that the press-conference sequence, in which Splinter’s copies pass objects and interact, included a 22-hour motion-control shot. That figure applies to the separate press-conference shot, not the sauna scene. Fleet described the cloning concept as inspired by cellular mitosis, with Benedict performing multiple versions of Splinter and extensive CG work helping create the effect.

The clone fight
For the clone fight, Fleet told The Art of VFX that the team and stunt coordinator planned the action with stunt visualization, then worked out where to use face replacement, edits, prosthetics, and other VFX. Nude clones wore custom underwear with a matching prosthetic application; visual effects refined the seams. That more involved mix of techniques is distinct from the sauna’s step-and-repeat setup.
The scale of Season 4’s visual effects
VFX Voice reported 1,600 visual-effects shots across the season’s eight episodes. It is a season-wide total, not a count of shots devoted to the sauna gag.

Why the show uses such an outrageous gag
Kripke told TV Insider in 2025 that the show uses outrageous moments as “flash and sizzle” to carry viewers into its discussions of politics and society. The scene’s shock value is part of the series’ broader approach, but the production explanation is specific: a physical prosthetic, repeated locked-off performances, and VFX assembly.
