August Moon is fictional, but its songs were designed to sound like the catalog of a successful pop group with a history of its own. Songwriter and executive music producer Savan Kotecha shaped the band’s musical direction around Nicholas Galitzine’s voice, while composer Siddhartha Khosla created a separate score to inhabit the same world.
Who wrote August Moon’s songs?
Savan Kotecha led the songwriting for August Moon and served as the film’s executive music producer. Salon reports that the film uses seven original songs for the fictional band, with Nicholas Galitzine providing the lead vocals and Kotecha contributing backing vocals. Kotecha said “I Got You” began as a complete song idea he had kept in reserve, then developed with Ilya and Babyface. Salon’s interview with Kotecha describes his role and the vocal collaboration.
Kotecha said the team began from scratch rather than setting out to copy a particular real-world boy band. Comparisons with established groups may help audiences place August Moon’s sound, but they should not be mistaken for the songwriting team’s stated blueprint. In The Daily Beast, Kotecha described the challenge of making the fictional group’s songs convincing at the height of its success: “The challenge was going, ‘OK, so we’re gonna meet them at their peak, and you have to believe that they are this big pop band. And the songs have to live up to that,’”
How did Nicholas Galitzine’s voice shape the sound?
Kotecha said he needed to know who would play Hayes before he could settle on the music. After hearing Galitzine’s audition, Kotecha says he heard a strong voice that steered him toward guitars rather than the more dance-oriented or R&B direction he had considered. That is Kotecha’s account of how the performer informed the creative brief, not a technical analysis of the recordings. Salon reports Kotecha’s explanation of the casting and sound decision.

How the songs suggest August Moon’s career arc
Rather than giving the band a single unchanging sound, Kotecha planned the songs as snapshots of different stages in its development. He said, “The idea I had was to go, ‘OK, let’s break it down. What would their very first single sound like?’” In his outline, “I Got You” is the sweeter early song, “Taste” moves toward an up-tempo pop sound, and “Guard Down” brings more grit and guitars as fame gives the group greater control. Kotecha discussed that progression with The Daily Beast.
The sequence gives the fictional catalog a sense of growth: the songs are not simply interchangeable hits, but part of the story the film tells about a band becoming more established. The progression is Kotecha’s description of the plan; it should not be taken as evidence that the songs were modeled on any one real group.

How is Siddhartha Khosla’s score different from the pop songs?
The August Moon songs and the film score serve different purposes. The band’s songs are pop performances within the film’s world; Khosla’s score supports the film’s scenes. Khosla said the songs were already written when he joined, and described his task this way: “The songs were already written when I came in. My job was to now be the film score.”
For the score, Khosla described a synth-forward, modern approach, expanded with live orchestra. He said longing was a central feeling, alongside warmth and hope. Although he treated the score as separate from the songs, he wanted them to feel as if they belonged to the same world: “For this particular film, you do want the song and the score to feel that they exist in the same world.” Singer Kotomi contributed vocals to the score; Khosla’s account does not identify her as a singer on the August Moon songs. Khosla discussed the score and its relationship to the songs in an interview with CinemaBlend.
