In George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, Sunfyre kills Rhaenyra Targaryen after her half-brother Aegon II orders her fed to the dragon. That is the book-canon answer; it should not be treated as confirmation of how the television adaptation depicts the event.
How Rhaenyra dies in Fire & Blood
After Aegon II takes Rhaenyra prisoner on Dragonstone, he has her brought before him and fed to Sunfyre, his dragon. Sunfyre is the one that physically kills her; Aegon is responsible for ordering the execution. The distinction makes the most precise short answer: Sunfyre kills Rhaenyra on Aegon II’s order. TVLine’s book-death explainer describes this outcome from the source material.
Is this what happens in the TV show?
House of the Dragon is based on Fire & Blood, but an adaptation may change or omit details. Warner Bros. Discovery’s Season 3 announcement scheduled an eight-episode season to conclude on August 9, 2026. That schedule alone does not establish what its finale showed.
The official Season 3 Episode 3 synopsis says Rhaenyra learns that the situation in King’s Landing is not what she anticipated; it does not describe her ultimate fate. The official material cited here does not verify the show’s exact depiction of her death. So, if you mean the aired series rather than the book, the book’s account is not enough to confirm what appears on screen.
