Anatomy of a Fall does not make uncertainty a gap to be filled; it makes uncertainty the point. Justine Triet’s courtroom drama gives viewers competing accounts of a husband’s death and a marriage under strain, then leaves them to weigh what the evidence can—and cannot—settle. That ambiguity helped carry the film from the 2023 Palme d’Or at Cannes to a 2024 Academy Award for its screenplay.
A death that resists a simple answer
The film begins with the death of Samuel, who falls from the chalet where he lives with his wife, Sandra, and their son. The circumstances become the subject of a criminal case, but Anatomy of a Fall does not offer a clean, uncontested account of what happened. Its official synopsis describes “conflicting evidence and inconsistent testimony,” setting up a mystery that viewers must interpret rather than simply solve.
The question that follows Sandra through the story is direct: “Did she do it?” The Associated Press reported that this was a question Sandra Hüller encountered after the film premiered at Cannes. Yet the film’s force comes less from supplying a definitive answer than from showing how partial evidence, memory, and perspective shape the stories people believe.
Snoop is a possible witness, not a verdict
The family dog, Snoop, becomes a possible witness in the case, an unusual detail that underscores how much the inquiry depends on interpreting limited clues. His presence does not certify one account of Samuel’s death. The official film site and the AP coverage support the film’s unresolved framing, not a settled verdict.

The courtroom also puts a relationship on trial
The case is not only an investigation of a death. As the testimony and evidence accumulate, the proceedings expose the history and tensions of Sandra and Samuel’s relationship. The court’s effort to reconstruct an event becomes entangled with the effort to judge the people involved: what they said, what they withheld, and how others interpret their behavior.
In a Cannes interview, Triet described using the procedural form to reflect on relationships between men and women. That critical frame helps explain why the trial feels larger than a puzzle about physical evidence: the competing versions of events also reveal the strains and power dynamics within a marriage. It is a way to read the film, not a legal conclusion about Samuel’s death.
From Cannes’ Palme d’Or to the Oscars
Triet directed Anatomy of a Fall, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Cannes later reported that five feature films from its 2023 selection crossed the one-million-spectator threshold, including the Palme d’Or winner. That is a group-level threshold; it does not establish an individual attendance total for Anatomy of a Fall.
At the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, 2024, the film received five nominations and won Writing (Original Screenplay), credited to Triet and Arthur Harari.

The awards recognition followed the same quality that made the film difficult to reduce to a conventional whodunit: the screenplay sustains competing interpretations while turning the process of judging evidence into a study of character and intimacy.
Why France’s Oscar submission is a separate question
France selected The Taste of Things as its submission for the Academy Award for International Feature Film. That national submission decision should not be confused with Anatomy of a Fall’s eligibility and success in other Oscar categories. The Academy’s 2024 record lists the film’s five nominations, including its screenplay win, while the AP reported France’s choice of The Taste of Things for the international-feature submission. The available sources establish the selection, but not one definitive reason for it.
