The record describes a professional relationship shaped by two films and a shared production experience, not a documented romance or a dramatic private falling-out.
What Anne Hathaway said had changed
In a 2010 interview about Love & Other Drugs, Hathaway was asked: “How much has changed in both yours and Jake’s lives since ‘Brokeback Mountain’?” She answered: “Gosh, I think everything except for our families and friends have changed in our lives since then. We are basically the same people, just older and wiser.” Geo News, carrying the AFP interview, published her answer on November 19, 2010.

Her reply presents the passage of time as substantial while describing the two of them as fundamentally unchanged. It is a brief public reflection, not a detailed account of how their private relationship developed between films.
They worked together again in Love & Other Drugs
Hathaway and Gyllenhaal first appeared together in Brokeback Mountain (2005), then reunited as co-stars in Love & Other Drugs (2010). The later film’s press interviews provide the context for Hathaway’s comment: she was looking back on the years since their earlier collaboration while discussing a new one.

Contemporary coverage described the actors rehearsing for weeks with director Ed Zwick and developing their approach to the film’s intimate scenes. That reporting speaks to their work as collaborators; it does not establish details about their off-camera relationship beyond their public remarks. The Los Angeles Times covered their work together on November 21, 2010.
What Brokeback Mountain adds to the story
In Brokeback Mountain, Hathaway played Lureen Newsome and Gyllenhaal played Jack Twist. Lureen is Jack’s wife in the film; Jack’s central love story is with Ennis Del Mar, played by Heath Ledger. Those are the characters’ relationships, not evidence of a romantic relationship between the actors.
The film adapts Annie Proulx’s short story. In official reflections on the production, Hathaway discussed how Lureen changes as her marriage to Jack develops—a comment about portraying a fictional character. Focus Features’ collection of cast and crew reflections provides that character and production context.
How Gyllenhaal remembered the cast’s bond
In a 2015 oral history, Gyllenhaal recalled that the Brokeback Mountain cast became close through the time they spent together. He described a film industry where “relationships are fleeting,” then said of the cast’s shared experience: “It’s why we are all still close—not just bonded by the success of the film, but bonded by the experience.”

He was speaking about the cast as a group, rather than giving a specific account of his relationship with Hathaway. His recollection helps explain the production’s lasting significance for its participants, but it does not supply a pair-specific timeline. Out published the oral history on July 28, 2015.

The available public comments support a straightforward account: Hathaway and Gyllenhaal shared a major film, later reunited professionally, and spoke warmly about the passage of time and the experience of making Brokeback Mountain. They do not document a dramatic rupture, a romance, or a detailed private relationship timeline. For broader film context, Focus Features’ 2025 anniversary overview revisits the film and its cast and crew.
