J survives, but his final image is one of isolation rather than reunion.
What J does in “FUBAR”
The finale’s decisive evidence is practical. As the family tries to get Pope out of custody, J leaves Deran and Craig to manage the escape without him. He then tells authorities where the storage unit is. The unit contains the family’s cash, weapons, and getaway cars, making the tip a direct blow to their plan rather than a symbolic gesture of anger. TVLine’s finale recap recounts the sequence.

J’s actions culminate in his confrontation with Pope at Smurf’s house. Pope accuses J of setting the family up to die; J answers that they deserved it because they could have saved his mother, Julia, and did not. The revenge motive is therefore stated by J himself, linking the betrayal to the family’s past treatment of Julia rather than reducing it to a desire for money.
Why Billy’s warning holds up—and what it does not prove
Billy was right in the limited, meaningful sense that J ultimately chooses his own revenge over loyalty to the uncles who had come to rely on him. J’s decision costs them their escape plan and contributes to the chain of events that ends in tragedy. The finale does not establish that every earlier bond was false or that J acted only for financial gain; it gives him a specific grievance and shows him pursuing it at devastating cost.

Penny complicates the picture. J initially uses her as part of his long con and later as an alibi. When she decides not to flee with him, he poisons her drink; the recap reports that he cries after she dies. Showrunner Daniele Nathanson told TVLine she believed J genuinely fell in love with Penny, describing the dynamic as “a classic tale of falling in love with the mark.” That interpretation does not erase his manipulation or the choice that kills her. Instead, it makes the revenge victory more corrosive: J can care for someone and still use her as part of his plan.
How the escape ends for Pope, Craig, and Deran
Pope
Pope saves J from drowning and releases him, recalling his own failure to stand up to Smurf when she abandoned Julia. He then sets the Cody house on fire and dies by the pool. Nathanson later clarified that Pope did not intentionally kill himself. She said he had been shot at, had removed a tracker, and had lost blood during the day; she described a heart attack or heartache as the likely cause. The scene may suggest a release from guilt, but that emotional reading is distinct from the showrunner’s explanation of the physical cause. TVLine’s interview with Nathanson addresses the distinction.
Craig and Deran
Craig is shot by a child during the convenience-store holdup and dies. Deran survives and promises to care for Craig’s son, Nick. Nathanson said she imagined Deran coordinating with Renn and eventually trying to reconnect with Adrian, but those are her thoughts about what might happen after the finale—not events shown on screen. Nathanson’s post-finale comments describe that possible future.

J survives, and the final image places him alone in luxury. That contrast is the finale’s sharpest verdict: he has outlasted the family, but his material success is not presented as a happy reunion or an uncomplicated triumph. The betrayal has achieved its purpose while leaving him without the people he was willing to sacrifice—and without Penny.

Animal Kingdom ended after six seasons. TNT had announced season six as the final season; its renewal announcement said season four had reached 27 million viewers across all platforms, a network-reported figure from 2021 rather than an independently audited comparison. The network said the final season would premiere June 19, 2022, and the series concluded on August 28, 2022. TNT’s final-season announcement and the network’s season-premiere announcement establish that dated context; TV Insider’s contemporaneous report records the series finale and noted spinoff speculation at the time, when TNT had not confirmed a spinoff.
