But an EEG records brain activity; it cannot, by itself, establish that a medium’s information came from deceased people—or prove that the medium was faking.
What happened during Tyler Henry’s brain scan?
Before the Hollywood Medium season-four finale, Dr. Drew Pinsky arranged for Henry to be monitored during a reading with Steve-O, who was presented as a skeptic. Henry told Extra on April 18, 2019 that he wanted to see what might happen to his brain during a reading.
The segment identified the procedure as quantitative EEG, or qEEG, and took place at Peak Brain Institute. Andrew Hill worked with Dr. Drew as the recording was compared with a baseline. Henry later described the activity as unusual and said his brain looked asleep while he was conscious. That is Henry’s account of the televised result, not a conclusion from an independent scientific report.
In the segment transcript, Hill and others discussed differences in the recordings and possible interpretations. Hill also cautioned that brain maps do not provide a definitive narrative about what a person is experiencing. The segment did not present a blinded accuracy test or a replicated experiment.

What can an EEG establish?
An EEG measures electrical activity recorded at the scalp. A qEEG applies quantitative analysis to EEG data and may display patterns as summaries or maps. If recordings differ between a baseline and a task, that can indicate that measured brain activity differed under those conditions. It does not, on its own, explain why.
In this case, a difference in brain activity would not show whether Henry’s statements were accurate, where any information came from, or whether he was communicating with the dead. The televised segment’s own discussion recognized that the maps could not supply a definitive account of what the patterns meant.

Why the scan did not prove Henry was genuine—or fake
The headline’s “prove he wasn’t fake” framing goes beyond what the scan can show. An unusual or altered brain state is not evidence by itself that a person has received information from the dead. Equally, the scan does not establish fraud. It addresses brain activity during a particular task, not the source or accuracy of the reading.
The distinction matters because a test of brain state is different from a test of information accuracy. To investigate whether a medium obtains information anomalously, researchers need to assess what the medium reports against suitable controls. The televised qEEG segment did not report that kind of controlled accuracy assessment.

How controlled mediumship studies ask a different question
A controlled writing study
Elizabeth Schmitt Freire and colleagues studied alleged mediumistic writing with eight mediums, 94 sitters, and 18 writing sessions. Sitters scored a target letter alongside five control letters without knowing which was the target. The target letters did not score differently from the controls, and the authors reported that the mediums did not demonstrate anomalous information about deceased people under those strict conditions. The study was published online in 2020, with its journal issue dated January–February 2022. It did not test Henry or the Hollywood Medium reading. The study record describes the experiment.
A controlled EEG study published in 2026
A 2026 study analyzed 28 women: 14 alleged mediums and 14 controls. Its abstract reports changes in some connectivity measures during mediumistic-trance and prayer tasks, and describes the trance task as an altered state distinct from sleep. It did not test Henry or establish that the reported experiences came from deceased people. The result illustrates that researchers can study task-related brain differences without resolving the claimed source of an experience. Read the PubMed record.
