Sakuting is a folk dance associated with Abra and Ilocano communities in northern Luzon. Dancers strike paired sticks in rhythm and perform choreographed mock sparring; accounts also connect the dance with Christmas plaza performances and house-to-house visits. Its precise creation date and earliest origins are not established by the sources described here.
Where is Sakuting from?
Sakuting is most closely associated with Abra. Smithsonian Folkways describes it as a dance from Abra, while a Philippine Department of Education Grade 8 module lists both Abra and Ilocos Norte as places of origin. The evidence supports a connection to the Ilocano region of northern Luzon, but it does not establish a single town, founding date, or definitive account of how the dance began.
That distinction matters: a dance’s regional association can be well recognized even when its exact beginnings are uncertain. The available institutional descriptions do not provide a dependable date for Sakuting’s creation.
What is the history behind the dance?
Sakuting has been documented and taught as part of Philippine folk-dance education, and it also appears in staged performance and recording. The Department of Education module attributes research on the dance to Francisca Reyes Aquino. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts describes Aquino’s broader field research into local celebrations, rituals, and sports, which led to a 1926 thesis and educational publications. That history helps explain how folk dances were recorded and brought into teaching; it does not date Sakuting itself.

A Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company performance was preserved on a 1991 Monitor International compact disc, with Smithsonian Folkways program notes describing Sakuting as a spirited percussion dance from Abra. This is a useful record of a staged presentation, not proof that every community performs the dance in exactly the same way.
A reported explanation of what Sakuting represents
A Municipality of Dolores, Abra account interprets the dance as portraying tensions between lowland Christian Ilocanos and mountain communities. That is one reported explanation, not a settled account of the dance’s origin: the municipal page credits an eHow article, while the Smithsonian program note and Department of Education module described here do not independently verify it.

The same municipal account links the stick movements to Arnis and says the dance may have older roots. These points should likewise be treated as claims made by that page, not as established history. The material available here does not substantiate claims that Sakuting was created to conceal Arnis practice or that Spanish authorities banned Arnis.
Why do dancers use sticks, and what does the performance look like?
The sticks create the dance’s rhythmic, percussive sound and shape its mock-sparring choreography. Smithsonian Folkways describes male and female partners carrying wooden sticks and performing a mock fight in rhythm. The local description from Dolores adds circling, changing places, tapping the floor and other dancers’ sticks, marching, and short shuffling steps forward or sideways.

The Dolores page describes a stick made from bamboo or striped wood, tapered and around 1½ feet long. That is the local page’s description, not a universal specification for every performance. It also notes that some modern interpretations add more athletic martial-arts gestures or ballet movement; it does not identify these as distinct, established regional variants.
When was Sakuting performed?
Accounts associate Sakuting with Christmas celebrations. Dancers are described performing in town plazas or visiting homes, where they received gifts, or aguinaldos. The Department of Education module likewise describes young dancers going house to house with sticks that supplied rhythmic accompaniment and receiving household gifts.

The available descriptions emphasize rhythm. Smithsonian Folkways calls Sakuting a percussion dance and notes Chinese influence in its music. The Dolores account identifies rondalla accompaniment and describes a staccato style, suggesting Chinese influence alongside Spanish-influenced string instruments. These are source characterizations, not a definitive musicological account of where each musical feature came from.

For a reader encountering Sakuting in a performance, the clearest musical feature is the audible pattern of sticks struck together or against the floor, coordinated with the dancers’ steps and accompaniment.
What is known—and not known—about Sakuting’s origins?
- Well supported: Sakuting is associated with Abra and the Ilocano region, uses rhythmic sticks and mock-sparring movement, and has been connected with Christmas performances.
- Reported but not independently confirmed in the sources described here: the interpretation that the dance represents conflict between lowland Christians and mountain communities, as well as claims tying its origins to religious ritual or Arnis.
- Not established: a precise founding date, a definitive origin story, or a complete account of how the dance changed across communities.
So the most accurate history is partly a performance history: Sakuting is a regional dance preserved in educational and staged contexts, with a recognizable stick-driven form and seasonal associations. Its earliest origin remains uncertain.
