His Three Daughters is a contained family drama about three estranged sisters brought together by their father’s approaching death. Its close focus on old resentments, uneasy caregiving and moments of bittersweet humor makes it the 2024 Netflix movie I’m most excited to recommend to viewers who value intimate, performance-led stories.
What is His Three Daughters about?
Katie (Carrie Coon), Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) gather in their father Vincent’s New York apartment as his health declines. They share a father but have different mothers and sharply different ways of seeing the world. The pressure of caring for Vincent brings old grievances into the open as the sisters try to repair their relationship. Netflix describes the story as unfolding over three volatile days; director Azazel Jacobs has said the action covers roughly three and a half days.

Three sisters, three different points of friction
- Katie is a controlling Brooklyn mother navigating a difficult relationship with her teenage daughter.
- Christina is a free-spirited mother spending time apart from her children for the first time.
- Rachel has stayed in Vincent’s apartment, where she spends her time sports-betting and smoking. She is Katie and Christina’s stepdaughter, a difference that adds another layer to the sisters’ tensions.
The film keeps its attention on the family’s shared space rather than widening into a broad portrait of their lives. Jacobs connected the compressed time frame to the way time felt during end-of-life experiences with family and friends, an observation about his own experience rather than a universal rule: “I’ve found time moving in inexplicable ways in the end-of-life experiences I’ve had with family and friends.”
Who is in His Three Daughters?
The three leads are Carrie Coon as Katie, Elizabeth Olsen as Christina and Natasha Lyonne as Rachel. The listed supporting cast includes Jovan Adepo, Jay O. Sanders, Rudy Galvan, Jose Febus and Jasmine Bracey. Jacobs has said he wrote the roles with Coon, Olsen and Lyonne in mind. Lyonne discussed leaning into Rachel’s stoner characterization, while Olsen described Jacobs’s view of Christina as a mediator and people pleaser, according to Netflix Tudum’s cast guide.

Who directed His Three Daughters?
Azazel Jacobs wrote, directed and edited the film. Netflix announced its acquisition after the movie’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in October 2023. It is a drama, but the emotional register is not unbroken gloom: Netflix describes it as bittersweet and often funny. That mix of grief, prickly conflict and humor is central to why the premise feels inviting rather than simply bleak.
What makes it worth watching?
The appeal is the scale of the conflict: these sisters have to manage the practical and emotional strain of their father’s decline while confronting their own history. The enclosed setting gives the performances room to carry small shifts in power and affection. Coon, Olsen and Lyonne also bring distinct energies to characters who do not begin from a shared understanding of what family owes them.
Rank #2
This is a good fit if you like dialogue-led family dramas, are interested in the three lead performances, and can sit with grief and end-of-life themes alongside humor. It may be a harder watch if you want a plot driven by action or prefer to avoid sustained family conflict. Netflix lists the film as R-rated, so check the rating guidance that applies where you watch.
