Gagan Gill’s Hindi poetry collection Main Jab Tak Aayi Bahar won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Hindi poetry in 2024. A brief excerpt published by Scroll begins with a speaker coming outside to find that “our hands” have become empty—a spare image that opens questions about absence, return and what remains. Scroll published the passage on 20 December 2024 and identifies it as an excerpt from the Rajkamal Prakashan collection.
What the title and award refer to
The Sahitya Akademi’s official awards list records Main Jab Tak Aai Bahar by Gagan Gill as the 2024 award-winning work in Hindi poetry. The spelling varies: the Akademi lists “Aai,” while Scroll and the publisher use “Aayi.” The award listing and the publisher’s catalog identify the same author and work.
The Akademi’s January–March 2025 newsletter describes Gill as an “eminent Hindi poet, writer and translator,” and characterizes the collection as bringing spirituality and modernity together. That is the newsletter’s description; the excerpt itself invites a more particular reading through its images and changes in perspective.
Reading the opening image
Scroll’s excerpt opens: “मैं जब तक आई बाहर / ख़ाली हो चुके थे हमारे हाथ” (“By the time I came outside, our hands had become empty”). The translation here is a close rendering of the quoted Hindi, not a published English translation.

The line turns on a gap between two moments. The speaker comes out only after something has happened; the phrase “our hands” makes the emptiness shared rather than purely individual. But the excerpt does not identify what the speaker was inside, what has passed, or what the hands once held. Those absences are part of what a reader has to reckon with, not evidence for one fixed explanation.
Questions the lines leave open
- What does “outside” mean here: a literal place, a private inwardness, or another kind of threshold?
- What might the hands have held—something tangible, an opportunity, a relationship, or something else?
- Why does the speaker say “our” hands? Who is included in that shared loss?
These are interpretive possibilities prompted by the language, not claims about Gill’s intention. No verified explanation by Gill of this specific excerpt is available in the sources cited here.
