The film’s credits sequences have different purposes: a montage looks back at Fox’s X-Men-era films, while the final tag pays off an earlier joke about Johnny Storm. Editor Shane Reid said Ryan Reynolds originated the montage as an affectionate tribute, and that the Johnny Storm scene—not a separate multiverse tease—was always intended to be the ending.
Why are there two credits scenes?
They do different jobs rather than forming a single sequel hook. The montage plays during the credits and celebrates the history behind the Fox-era characters and films. The final tag returns to Johnny Storm’s earlier rant for a comic payoff.

In an interview with Germain Lussier at io9, published August 9, 2024, editor Shane Reid said the Johnny Storm rant was always planned as the final tag. He said the production did not shoot another large multiverse tease. The film’s last scene, in Reid’s account, is a callback—not a confirmed announcement about the next X-Men film.
Who came up with the montage?
Reid credited Ryan Reynolds with the idea. Reynolds wanted audiences to leave with something sweet and appreciative of the people and films behind these characters. Reid called it “Ryan’s brainchild” and said Reynolds “always envisioned it.”

- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
The montage was assembled from existing material rather than filmed as a new scene. Maximum Effort supplied clips, while Reid also found footage in special features. The material included interview moments with Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman talking about the characters, bringing the two leads’ shared history into the wider look back.
How did the montage’s opening “X” work?
The opening briefly encourages viewers to wonder whether the “X” signals a conventional franchise announcement. Reid said he enjoyed that moment of anticipation before the montage revealed itself as a legacy reel. Its purpose is celebratory, not a plot setup or confirmation of a future X-Men project.

Why did the montage need approvals?
Reid said the people shown in the footage had to approve their appearances. He described clearances as a substantial part of putting the montage together. Reynolds and director Shawn Levy personally called people, explained the filmmakers’ intent, and sought their approval. Reid described the finished montage as a “love letter.”
Reid also explained why Blade was absent: he said the Blade films were owned by New Line, which was outside Disney, and that he would have liked Blade included. That is Reid’s explanation for this montage; it should not be treated as a general account of the rights behind every omitted character.
