Stephen King announced on November 14, 2024, that he was leaving Twitter—now called X—because he found its atmosphere “too toxic,” and invited readers to follow him on Threads. The announcement was reported at the time; it does not establish whether he is active on Threads or X today.
What did Stephen King say about leaving X?
In wording reproduced by Mashable in a report republished by Yahoo, King wrote: “I’m leaving Twitter. Tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic. Follow me on Threads, if you like.” The quote describes his view of the platform’s atmosphere, not an independently measured assessment.
Although the announcement used the name Twitter, the platform is now known as X. The reports date King’s statement to November 14, 2024, so it is a historical announcement rather than a new move in 2026.
Was King banned, and was Threads his destination?
No. TechTimes reported on November 15, 2024, that King clarified he had not been banned and that leaving was his choice. In the same announcement, he invited followers to Threads. That establishes the destination he named at the time, but not his present-day account activity.

Who is Stephen King?
King is a horror novelist known for books including Pet Sematary and Salem’s Lot. His November 2024 post was a personal decision about social media, rather than an announcement about his writing.
