Its invented characters and story have nevertheless prompted comparisons with the Birnies, and those comparisons have been debated by survivors and commentators.
What is Hounds of Love about?
Written and directed by Ben Young, Hounds of Love is a 2016 Australian crime drama. Its story is set in the summer of 1987 and follows seventeen-year-old Vicki Maloney, abducted by serial-killer couple John and Evelyn White. Vicki tries to use the volatile relationship between her captors to survive. Screen Australia’s film guide lists Emma Booth, Ashleigh Cummings, and Stephen Curry among the cast, with Susie Porter, Damian de Montemas, and Harrison Gilbertson also credited.
Published runtimes differ: Screen Australia lists 108 minutes, while the Australian Classification record lists 104 minutes. Those figures may reflect different records or versions, so they should not be treated as a single definitive runtime. The Australian Classification record assigns the film an MA 15+ rating.
Is Hounds of Love based on the Birnies?
No—not as a direct adaptation, according to producer Melissa Kelly. In a 2016 interview with PerthNow, Kelly said, “The story is inspired by a number of true crimes that happened in Australia and overseas, however, it is a work of fiction.” She added: “This film is not based on the Birnies.”

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters: the Whites and Vicki are fictional characters, not presented by the producer as the real perpetrators or a literal portrait of a particular survivor. “Inspired by true crimes” describes influences on the fiction; it does not make the film a factual account.
Why do people compare the film with the Birnie murders?
The comparison is rooted in reported similarities between the film’s fictional couple and David and Catherine Birnie, who murdered four women in Perth over a five-week period. The Guardian reported in 2017 that Young drew on accounts of nine murderous couples, while also noting the parallels viewers and commentators saw with the Birnie crimes. Those comparisons are interpretations, not proof that the film depicts the Birnies. The Guardian’s account includes survivor Kate Moir’s criticism and film curator and scholar Alexandra Heller-Nicholas’s assessment that the resemblance was particularly close. Heller-Nicholas said, “I looked up the Birnie house on a real-estate website and the layout of the house in Hounds of Love is almost identical.”

The result is a genuine tension: the producer described a fictional work drawing on multiple cases, while some observers have argued that its similarities to one notorious Perth case are hard to ignore. It is more accurate to acknowledge both positions than to label the film simply “the Birnie story.”
