What stood out at Australian Fashion Week 2024?
Coverage of the May 2024 shows and the people attending them captured a mix of striking finishes and recognizable silhouettes. PerthNow reported metallics, sheer garments, bubble hems and statement hosiery across runway and street-style looks. A separate ABC News report identified denim as a resurgence on runways and in the front row. Neither report supplied quantitative rankings, so the trends are best read as notable examples rather than a popularity contest.

Metallics and sheer layers on runway and street
Reflective finishes
Metallics offered one of the clearest visual threads in PerthNow’s account. Examples ranged from Acler’s gold lamé boots to reflective garments and accessories in Rory William Docherty’s Resort 2025 collection. Silver looks were also reported at Bec + Bridge and Viktoria & Woods, with a silver look by Mariam Seddiq among the examples. The report documents what appeared at the event; it does not establish a broader trend ranking.
Sheer dressing
Sheer pieces appeared in different forms, including skirts and dresses at P.E Nation, Carla Zampatti, Albus Lumen and Beare Park. Juvelle Behrendorff, identified by PerthNow as a Perth stylist, described the street-style pairing of sheer pieces with tailoring: “Sheer is still trending highly, from mesh fabrics to knit sequins. In street style, lots of people are wearing mesh or lace skirts with blazers over the top, it’s becoming more of an everyday piece to wear casually.”

Bubble hems and expressive hosiery
A rounded silhouette
The bubble hem was a recognizable runway shape in the coverage, appearing at Emma Mulholland on Holiday, Romance Was Born and Rory William Docherty. Emma Mulholland on Holiday’s white mini version was one example. For anyone searching for the general shape, “bubble-hem skirt” is a useful term; it does not imply that a retail listing reproduces a designer’s runway garment.
Hosiery as a focal point
Stockings, lace, fishnets and bright red tights appeared in runway and attendee looks. In those outfits, hosiery was a visible styling element rather than an afterthought, adding color, texture or contrast to the rest of the look.

Denim and the broader street-style mix
ABC News’ short report, published 19 May 2024, offered a distinct angle: Harper’s Bazaar news director Patty Huntington identified denim on runways and in the front row as a resurgence. That observation complements the more detailed PerthNow coverage, but it remains an attributed report from that event, not a claim about denim’s status today.

Australian Fashion Week’s program put established labels alongside emerging designers and graduates. PerthNow covered the David Jones Indigenous Fashion Projects runway, which included Nat Dann of Ihraa Swim alongside Joseph & James, Miimi & Jiinda, Gali Swimwear and Lazy Girl Lingerie. Dann is Bardi, Nyul Nyul and Nyikina. These are distinct designers and practices, not simply another trend category.

The coverage also noted emerging designers at the Next Gen runway and graduates presenting through the Fashion Design Studio. A Destination NSW announcement in 2023 about the 2024 program valued the Next Gen prize at over $100,000. The announced prize included runway production, runway photography and livestream content, plus DHL shipping credits; that figure refers to the program prize, not an industry statistic.
In the same Destination NSW announcement, Natalie Xenita, then Vice President-Managing Director of IMG Fashion Events and Properties, said: “Australian Fashion Week in Sydney is recognised globally as a hub of inspiration and innovation.”

How to read the 2024 trend coverage
- Separate runway from street style: Some observations describe designer collections; others describe what attendees wore.
- Look for specific examples: Metallic boots, sheer skirts, a bubble-hem mini or red tights are concrete instances, not proof of universal adoption.
- Keep the date attached: These reports describe Australian Fashion Week in May 2024. They do not establish which looks remain current in 2026.
