Henry Johnson was an African American soldier in the 369th Infantry Regiment, the New York unit known as the Harlem Hellfighters. On May 15, 1918, in France, he displayed the heroism recognized by the United States with a posthumous Medal of Honor in 2015. His story also belongs to the history of a segregated U.S. military: the 369th served under French command during World War I.
Who was Henry Johnson?
Johnson served in Company C of the 369th Infantry Regiment, a New York National Guard unit. It began as the 15th New York Infantry and became the 369th Infantry in wartime service. The regiment was widely known as the Harlem Hellfighters.
The 369th was an African American regiment in a segregated U.S. military. African American units were not generally integrated with white units, and the 369th fought alongside French forces. That context matters: Johnson’s recognition honors his actions, but it does not undo the discrimination shaping his service. The U.S. Department of Defense’s account of Johnson and the U.S. Army’s regiment and award profile place his service within that history.
What did Johnson do to earn the Medal of Honor?
The official Medal of Honor citation identifies May 15, 1918, on the Western Front in France, as the date and place of the heroism for which Johnson was recognized. It describes extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty. The citation concludes: “Private Johnson’s extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.” This is the institutional language of the award citation, reproduced in the Army’s Medal of Honor profile.

Rank labels differ across the records: the Army profile heading styles him “Sergeant,” while the Medal of Honor citation calls him “Private.” The sources cited here do not establish the rank he held at the exact moment of the encounter, so it is more precise to refer to him as Henry Johnson in general prose rather than silently resolve the discrepancy.
Why was the Medal of Honor awarded posthumously?
Johnson received France’s Croix de Guerre for wartime bravery. The United States awarded him its Medal of Honor posthumously in 2015, decades after his death in 1929. The French decoration and the U.S. award are distinct recognitions: the Croix de Guerre came during his wartime service, while the Medal of Honor was granted later by the United States. The official Army citation anchors the Medal of Honor recognition to May 15, 1918; it should not be confused with the date the medal was awarded.

The award recognizes Johnson’s heroism, but the long interval before U.S. recognition should be read alongside the segregated conditions under which he and the 369th served. The available official citation establishes the date and language of the honor; it is not, by itself, a complete reconstruction of every detail of the encounter.
How does Johnson fit into the Harlem Hellfighters’ history?
Johnson’s service in Company C links his individual story to the 369th’s wider wartime record. The unit entered service as the 15th New York Infantry and served as the 369th Infantry in the war. Army material describes it fighting under French command; the Army profile also reports that the regiment spent 191 days in front-line trenches, though that profile does not specify a publication year for the figure. This unit history helps explain why Johnson is remembered as a Harlem Hellfighter, while keeping the focus on the specific action named in his award citation.
