She also said the moment made sense for her character and was not included for shock value. Portman recalled that the first attempt felt awkward; neither comment establishes that the actresses regretted the scene or had a personal conflict.
What Kunis said about filming the scene
At a 2010 Black Swan press conference, Kunis described intimate filming as uncomfortable regardless of whether the actors are the same or different sexes. As TV Guide reported, she said, “Any time you do any intimate scene on film, it’s going to be a little uncomfortable, whether it’s the same sex or the opposite sex.”
Kunis added that knowing Portman beforehand helped. She said they did not discuss the scene much before shooting: “We just kind of did it. It made sense for the character. It wasn’t put in for shock value.” Her explanation was about the scene’s place in the story, not a claim that filming felt effortless.
Portman remembered an awkward first attempt
Portman told the Los Angeles Times that the first take was hesitant: “I remember the first time we did it, we were both sort of embarrassed and not going for it.” The paper described the scene as emerging from the unstable, competitive relationship between Nina, played by Portman, and Lily, played by Kunis.

The same report said the actresses were friends before and after production. It also reported that director Darren Aronofsky promised to keep control of the footage until release and that crew members’ phones were confiscated. Those are details from the newspaper’s account of the production, rather than a general rule or current policy.
Why Kunis objected to the scene dominating coverage
Kunis was also frustrated that interviewers repeatedly made the intimate moment the main subject of conversations about the film. The Advocate quoted her saying, “I just wish everyone could walk out of an hour-and-a-half movie with something to talk about other than that one scene.” Her point was that the film offered more to discuss than its most attention-grabbing sequence.

In that interview, Kunis described Lily as “a free spirit living her 20s in New York City,” and said she did not view the character as a lesbian. That was her interpretation of Lily, not a statement about Kunis’s own sexuality.

In a 2025 Vogue anniversary interview, Portman and Kunis recalled Aronofsky trying to encourage rivalry by telling each actress that the other was working especially hard. They said they realized what he was doing. Aronofsky described his approach as, “My take is that I was trying to be a sneaky director and make them argue.”

This later recollection concerns the director’s attempt to shape the working dynamic. It does not show that the actresses were genuinely hostile, or explain the intimate scene as a product of real animosity. Their scene-specific comments in 2010 instead focused on ordinary awkwardness, friendship, and the moment’s relevance to the characters.
