2010 separation, divorce filings and reconciliation
June and July 2010: Legal filings
Montag filed for legal separation on June 8, 2010, and filed a divorce petition on July 30, according to CBS News. These filings are part of the public record of the relationship’s timeline, even though the couple later gave a different account of the breakup storyline.
The couple’s later account of the breakup
In a 2011 interview, the couple said they had faked the breakup for money, according to TV Insider. That is their retrospective explanation; it should not be treated as an independently established motive for each legal filing. In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Pratt reflected on how they presented themselves on the show: “I wish we had done interviews differently — like, on the show, maybe looked horrible and then we got an interview, and then like, ‘Oh, it’s fun and TV and like, so amped up,’”
